Indo-Persian Musical Cultures: Mapping Musical Connections
Description: Lecture, four hours. Study of connections between musical cultures of Indian subcontinent, Central Asia, and Iran. Exploration of musical ideas, forms, theories, instruments, styles, lyrics, etc. that make visible cultural continuities across broad Indo-Persianate world. Connected histories developed in these vast areas are not just through official language and religion of courts--Persian and Islam--but through trade, wandering Sufis, Persian poetry, scholars, and musicians, engendering deep and long-lasting connections. Focus is both historical and contemporary. Readings include articles and book chapters on musical cultures of Central and South Asia. By exploring diversity of commonalities in Indo-Persian musical cultures, understanding of often hidden similarities across different ethnic, cultural, geographical, and political boundaries is enhanced. Study elucidates values, ideas, and goals that relate individuals and groups across different places and cultures. Letter grading.

Fall 2023 - If you're looking for an easy A class, this is the one. Not only is this course extremely manageable and easy, but the professor is the kindest man ever and willing to help each student. The class is based on discussion and we set our desks up in a circle because he wanted to diminish the professor-student power dynamic. We would discuss the readings and he would provide additional context on important topics or any topics students had questions on. The only assignments in the course are a midterm paper, a final paper, and a participation grade. The papers had to be 2,000 words discussing each of the readings and discussing what you learned from class, so do make sure to take notes in class. My class was filled with ethnomusicology and musicology majors which made the class so much more enjoyable as I was learning things from the students too. Overall, this class was interesting and we learned so much information without feeling pressured to perform well.
