Jazz Arranging and Orchestration

Description: Lecture, three hours. Limited to Global Jazz Studies majors. Study of specific instruments and their unique use and application in jazz (jazz notation and terminology, transposition, woodwind doublings, brass mutes, etc.). Analysis of different writing techniques and approaches that distinguish different sub-styles of jazz from one another. Assignments focus on writing for medium and large ensembles, with final project of arrangement to be read by UCLA Jazz Orchestra. P/NP or letter grading.
