I am a history major, and Professor Ford is perhaps the best teacher in the department. Some students complain that her lectures are dry and boring, but I think it comes with the subject. Ford is very professional in regards to her course, and she is available in office hours or by appointment. Most of her exam questions come from her powerpoints or from the notes she writes on the board. I would highly recommend taking any class she teaches. Received an A in both Hist 1C and Hist 124C

I would not recommend any course taught by Vinay Lal. His lectures cover interesting material, but it is very easy to get lost since he does not slow down or attempt to engage with the students. The worst part of having taken his class is his grader. He had a graduate student named Brandon who wrote crazy illegible notes over everyone's papers with absolutely no constructive or positive feedback. I'm about to graduate UCLA with several honors and an overall GPA of 3.95. I made an A- in this class and that was with completing an extra credit essay to increase my final grade by 1/3 of a letter grade. This grading is unfair and unrealistic. I read every novel, every journal that consisted of 100+ pages every week and attended every single lecture. Part of the final grade was to include 20% for attendance, yet he did not take roll. My grade did not increase and several other students who never missed class did not have a higher grade for doing the extra essay or having perfect attendance. The history department has much better classes with great professors and TA's without a grind to axe. Choose wisely.

Spring 2018 - Professor Nasiali's lectures are multi-dimensional in terms of history, politics, culture and economics, entertaining and she does a great job of connecting modern French history to today's political and cultural environment. Her class mainly focuses on the political development of modern France at the beginning of the Third Republic and goes into the early 2000's. She encourages students to engage with questions throughout the lectures which are usually short. Once a week, participation will be graded by a group write-up of a primary source document assigned for the week which are not difficult. She remembers everyone's name and face, so constant attendance and participation are helpful. She also offers extra credit and encourages attendance to office hours. Overall, this is one of the easier classes I've taken at UCLA and would highly recommend it for the interesting material and great professor.
