If you have no background in Middle Eastern languages I do not recommend taking Hagigi as your professor. Though the prereq is no prior knowledge of Persian, the majority of the students speak Persian fluently or have prior knowledge of it. Thusly, the class is taught to their level. Do not be fooled, this is not a class for beginners. Also, the structure of the class inhibits learning. A class meets three times a week (not five), little interaction/speaking, and exams are ambiguous. If you are a beginner and are taking this professor, get a tutor, it is the only way you can pass this class.

Fall 2025 - 10/10 I loved this class and I adore Professor Pourzangi. She is an excellent, compassionate, and caring teacher whom you will love. I was shocked how much Farsi I was able to learn in just one quarter, and it was in no small part thanks to Prof. Pourzangi. Attending lecture is mandatory but you get about 5 absences a quarter before it begins to impact your grade (I ended up only missing twice). The tests were not that hard, the quizzes were only vocab, the class facilitates friendships: perfect fall quarter class.

Banafsheh is an amazing teacher. She understands that this is a completely new language so she is patient and understanding when it comes to knowing the material. You learn at a good pace and you will have homework, but it isn't too much or too hard. Take her if you want to learn a great language with a great teacher.
