It's only my first semester at UCLA but I swear this is the BEST class I've ever had! Prof Ballerini is a really passionate and knowledgeable teacher. His personal encounters and anecdotes made the class so vivid as if you were living back in Renaissance Italy. I always sat in the front row and was really engaged in every bit of information he gave us. There were three 2-3 page papers, one midterm and final. Midterm and final are both multiple choice so really it shouldn't be hard to study for. We didn't have a course reader but had approximately 20-40 pages of reading each week which I think is reasonable for a Literary analysis GE course. What you have to make sure is how all the historical books (or recipes) studied influence each other and how they reflect the contemporary culture in that time frame. The TAs are knowledgeable too and they all have personal connections with Italy and the language. Overall, I'm really happy with this course and would definitely recommend people to take it. <3
