Spring 2024 - No exams, no quizzes! Your grade is determined by participation (showing up to class), weekly assignments, and a research/creative project at the end of the quarter. Before each class, you have to do the assigned reading and do a reading review assignment. The reading review consists of a couple of questions about the reading. You just need to write a few sentences to answer each one, then submit the document before the start of each class. The final project is not too hard either. You can either research a topic that was introduced during the lectures, or do a creative project (i.e. make a video, draw a comic strip, etc.) that utilizes some aspect of Japanese linguistics. Then you have to do a short 3-minute presentation on your project. Would definitely want to take another class with Kaneyasu-sensei.

Winter 2016 - This was a very interesting class. The homework was helpful. The group project was fun. The TA was knowledgeable. Overall this class was a good experience. I am a Japanese major so this class was helpful to understand the orgin and history of Japanese. I am currently taking CM123 with Yuki Taylor which is a more technical class, but necessary if you are a Japanese major.
