I love this professor! I came into Korean 1 with some background knowledge of Korean, so this class was not very challenging for me, but it was rewarding. Doctor Choi is a wonderful, sweet professor who gives off very friendly, kind vibes. I loved her! She was confident about the material and passionate about our learning and just lovely. Tests in this class were very simple and fair: the final was one page front and back and took about an hour. In addition to lesson tests, there are vocabulary tests which simply test if you can translate words between English and Korean and vice versa, writing tests, and then some oral tests which include a group project. Grading is lenient and the TAs are amazing. If you are considering taking Korean as a foreign language, I definitely recommend it! Korean 1 spends the first two weeks teaching the alphabet and the rest of the weeks teaching vocabulary and grammar. It is definitely the easiest of KOR1-3, but it is a great dive if you're interested in the language.

I highly recommend professor Im (AKA Mitsunaga.) Class is stress free and way easy, yet I still feel like I've learned a lot. She's super chill and plays Kpop before every lecture. She speaks without an accent in English, yet her Korean pronunciation sounds spot on, too.

She takes role and attendance is part of your grade. Same goes for discussions... in fact, you learn just as much in your sections, almost like a second lecture. Expect a vocabulary quiz every lecture starting week 2 or so, but don't worry because they are really easy and always have extra credit problems. Her tests are very straightforward and she pretty much tells you exactly what's going to be on there. Also, expect group/video projects.

Both the textbook and workbook are quite necessary for this course but are reasonably priced so shouldn't be a problem. If you show up to all classes and discussions you barely need to study aside from maybe 20 minutes of quizlets beforehand for the daily quizzes in lectures which is probably the hardest part of the course. Course is incredibly accessible to everyone and is super fun so would recommend even if not super into Korean pop-culture (am not Korean nor was too invested in Korean pop-culture.)
