Winter 2026 - This is a really great class—especially if you have the time to fully engage with it. It’s a unique experience getting to spend an entire quarter reading science fiction literature, but if you don’t enjoy writing, it may not be the best fit. Aside from weekly 300 word discussion posts, there are only three assignments: Paper #1 (4-6 pgs), Paper #2 (8-12) pgs, and Paper #3 (4-6 pgs).The workload is manageable overall, but the longer paper can coincide with midterms in other classes, which makes time management important. That said, the class is very rewarding. It’s a great opportunity to write about something more creative and less conventional than in many other courses. While it does require effort to get the grade you want, it’s definitely worth it if the subject interests you. Thanks Dr. Gaffney!

Winter 2025 - Professor Griffey is a great professor. I took labor studies just for upper division credits and started the quarter worried I was not going to enjoy this class but I was wrong. Great professor and is very confident when he speaks and he knows what he is talking about. Homework is mainly just reading but you will write 3 essays (may vary). First 2 essays are not that bad, the last essay is 8-12 pages. Other than that, everything went smoothly this quarter. Hopefully I get to take another one of his classes in Fall 2025. Highly recommend this professor if you are just looking for upper division credits and for a chill class overall.
