Professor Phelan is one of the best professors that I've had during my two years at UCLA. At first the amount of material that will be covered seems extremely daunting but he simplifies so much of the material that it is not very hard to upkeep with it. His lectures are quite entertaining and not dry at all. Make sure to write down some of his side stories pertaining to the biology he is covering along with the questions and answers he posts during his lectures. These stories and questions are the ones that he will be using for his midterms and final exam. His exams are not very difficult but they do need some studying. The book is very helpful in explaining the material further but questions do not come directly from it most of the times. Make sure to buy Prep-U because it is very instrumental for the multiple choice portion of the test. Overall he's a great professor and makes LS 2 a great class to take.

I took Roberts with Esdin in LS2. Roberts is a good dude. He is really nice and cares a lot about his students. He holds office hours and seems like a generally nice guy. He cracks jokes during lectures and is pretty interesting to listen to. However, Roberts's one problem is that he talks really really really fast. I had to record his lectures because with all the information in LS2 and only 50 minute lectures, Roberts would fly through the information. He is a great guy, just a really fast talker. Record his lectures!

Fall 2016 - I took this class with Roth-Johnson and Cooper. This was one of the hardest and most stressful classes I've taken at UCLA. I watched all of the pre-recorded lectures and attended every lecture in person. I also read the textbook, actively participated in discussion, and attended office hours. However, I just don't think Dr. Roth-Johnson and Dr. Cooper's teaching methods worked for me. Too many concepts were crammed into one lecture and it was hard to keep up. We were given one practice test for each of the exams, but the answer key was never posted. Instead, we were told to post our questions on the CCLE discussion forum. When we asked a question, the professor and learning assistants would reply with even more questions, not giving a definite answer and leaving me more confused than I was before. The professors also don't allow us to have Peer Learning Facilitators, who would have made the class easier to understand. Instead, the class has its own Learning Assistants, which isn't as effective since they have select office hours which aren't as structured as PLF sessions. I wouldn't recommend this class because it makes the material more difficult than it needs to be, and taking it with Esdin would be a better choice.

Fall 2016 - If interested, I'm selling the loose-leaf textbook required for this class, “Life” by David Sadava, 10th Edition (most recent), for $60.00. However, this is not the custom version with Launchpad Access that is listed on the UCLA Textbook website. It is just the entire loose-leaf textbook. You may purchase it at your own discretion. The textbook is in almost-perfect condition. Please text me at: ********** Still available (9.5.17)
