Pragmatic Theory

Description: Lecture, four hours. Requisites: courses 200C, 201C. Introduction to formal pragmatic theory. Topics include speech act theory, imperatives, and other illocutionary moods; at-issue/not-at-issue distinction and other projective content; Gricean implicature, conversational implicature, and local implicature; and formal treatments of discourse, including game-theoretic pragmatics. S/U or letter grading.
