Fall 2023 - Brandon was an amazing TA who carried all of us through this class. Compared to the other TAs, he was the only one who clearly explained concepts and expectations, even providing MATLAB code that made the workload significantly easier. Brandon made himself available for questions during weekends and even during Thanksgiving break, which I greatly appreciated. The workload of this class is actually horrendous and the fact that this lab is only 2 units is an actual joke, I spent more time on this class than my other two lower divs combined. Start the labs and ask questions early on to mitigate your pain later.

Fall 2025 - Please like everyone else has said do not EVER procrastinate on this class. The moment you are done with the class, go home and start on it immediately. My advice is to start on the results and discussion part of the report, then everything else can be added later. This is due to you having a fresh memory of what just happened in lab so it will be easier to do these two sections without any issues IF YOU ARE EARLY!!! The lab themselves are pretty basic, more on the boring side due to there being only one XRD machine so it's more of a "the TA run the experiment while you just stand there and watch" kind of thing. Even though it is pretty boring, I think what you learn in this lab class overall is pretty cool and if your future career uses XRD, which is pretty basic in materials engineering, then the knowledge is pretty helpful. There will be 8 labs in total, and they are grouped together differently like so. You submit lab 1 first, then group 2 3, group 5, 6, 7, then lab 8. Lab 4,9 is more of an attendance lab with no real report to write besides a short form to fill in. Each lab will a have proportional amount of time to write, like lab 1 will have 2 to 3 week to write and submit, lab 2,3 will have 2 or 3 weeks, and so on. However the TA is pretty lenient and as long as you ask for a reasonable and infrequent extension, it will be granted. Gl on your journey with this class!
