Thermodynamics of Materials

Description: Lecture, four hours; outside study, eight hours. Principles of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics and their application to physical and chemical phenomena in materials. Finite-temperature properties of single-component and multicomponent systems, equations of state, thermodynamic potentials and their derivatives, phase diagrams, and other equilibrium properties. First-order and second-order phase transitions in liquids and solids. Introduction to classical and modern theories of critical phenomena. Thermodynamic description of irreversible processes and entropy generation. Letter grading.
