Applied Numerical Methods
Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Requisites: courses 32B, 33B, 115A, Program in Computing 10A or Computer Science 31. Introduction to numerical methods with emphasis on algorithms, analysis of algorithms, and computer implementation issues. Solution of nonlinear equations. Numerical differentiation, integration, and interpolation. Direct methods for solving linear systems. Letter grading.

Winter 2018 - Please take 151A with Teran if you can. His curve was super beneficial to our class, and the subject material is VERY useful. There is a LOT of information, so it is important to know the formulas and theorems, and get a good idea as to how to derive and quickly use the major formulas you’re given in class. Sometimes, Teran may write a lot of derivations and you may get lost. But just make sure to write everything he writes and catch up on the material after so that you don’t miss out on important facts. Our TA Jean-Michel was absolute godsend. If your class is strong, Teran will pull through. Definitely recommend. Oh, and he also worked on recent Disney films such as Moana and Frozen. So take him!

Fall 2019 - If you're conflicted about who to take for this class, definitely take Tong. I didn't realize how great he was until I started taking 151B with someone else. I wish I could have him again. Tong likes to review the previous class for the first 10 minutes of lecture, which makes new material a bit fast paced, but is helpful if you missed a class or tend to show up 5 minutes late. I got pretty wrecked by the first midterm because i studied a lot of the theory and didn't work on practice problems enough. His tests are very computational, so studying with practice problems is the way to go. I applied this for the second midterm and killed it, which worked out well because it replaced my first midterm. (P.S. please learn to pronounce the Greek letter "xi")

Summer 2020 - It's so sad that in class of 80 people, only 7-8 people would show up for lectures because she's very knowledgeable and caring. She always wanna make sure you understand the material and the hw questions. Her office hours were really helpful and most of the time she would solve the hw problems for us. The class is base on 35% of weekly hws (which would take some time), 25% midterm (similar to hw problems), 40% final (easiest test you can take in math department) . Overall she's very helpful and her course is extremely easy. Take her at any cost.

Winter 2023 - super nice dude with very clear notes, he also is very helpful and is one of the rare few teachers who actually cares-- he will know your name by the end of the quarter, will always make extra office hours with you, and respond to emails at ungodly hours. It was a pleasure taking the class with him - only downside is that the final was slightly hard but that mighta have been since I had a 131a final on the same day. TLDR great prof as long you try. Hopefully then tenure this man
