Perturbation Methods

Description: Lecture, three hours. Prerequisite: course 266A or equivalent. Boundary layer theory, matched asymptotic expansions, WKB theory. Problems with several time scales: Poincaré method, averaging techniques, multiple-scale analysis. Application to eigenvalue problems, nonlinear oscillations, wave propagation, and bifurcation problems. Examples from various fields of science and engineering.
