Fall 2019 - THE ONLY PROFESSOR YOU SHOULD NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH. TRUST ME. I'm a math major and I had to work my ass off to salvage a B. Plus, the guy is a dick. On the first midterm, like 50% of the class got an A- or more, so he announced that too many people did well so he was gonna make the second midterm MUCH tougher so that people wouldn't do well. He is the ONLY professor I have ever met who WANTS the students to fail. Honestly, I have ZERO respect for this man and I would never wish this hell upon anyone.

Fall 2014 - Took this class my first quarter at UCLA. It was a good transition into university life because it was not hard but it was harder than all my high school classes. Overall a good class Selling my textbook Rogawski second edition with binder included. No notes or highlights, and in mint condition. Text me at ********** I can meet on or around campus. Selling for$50 with price negotiable.

Math 31A and Math 31B with him. I got at least 3 or 4 past Brown midterms or finals before each midterm and final in this class and the ones I took with Brown this year (10F 11W) have been much much harder. He does recycle the type of problems but just makes them a lot harder or puts them together somehow. It isnt impossible though, I studied for 3 weeks straight for the final and got a B on it. I rarely went to lecture because he would spend most of the time doing proofs, and would end his lectures halfway through sections and also he would teach you the material with the hardest example of that problem he could come up with instead of showing us easier ones and progressing from there. I used the site patrickjmt to teach me all about series and other info I wasnt sure about and I was familiar with the material from taking AP Calc BC in high school. Also study your ass off for the final because its 50 percent and by far the hardest test. I learned that the hard way by going from a solid A to a C+ from the final in 31A.

Professor Burke was pretty nervous the first two weeks of class, but he did get a lot better the following weeks. Sometimes he got nervous when students asked him questions in class, but he always did follow up with an email of the correct answer when he wasn't sure. He went too fast most of the time, so I didn't learn much from lecture. I just mostly showed up to see what was being taught so I could learn it on my own with patrickjmt videos on youtube. I did some of my learning from TA office hours and review sessions also. Burke did sincerely cared that students understood the concepts in class and he wanted to help also. I never went to his office hours because of schedule conflicts, but I heard he was more helpful there with a small group rather than a 200 people lecture hall. Quizzes were given in discussion, which were exactly the same as problems from the hw, but he gave out a lot of hw problems every day. I thought his midterms and final were pretty reasonable. The average was always around 65% for midterms and around 70% for the final. I would recommend this class with Burke to those who don't mind putting extra effort out to understand concepts taught but also want the benefit of taking reasonable tests.

Winter 2023 - Do NOT take this professor. It said in my course that Conley will teach this class but instead some other TA called Timothy Smits taught us the whole quarter and he SUCKED! He never taught us anything. He just wrote examples on the board, poorly explained why the answer was X and expected us to understand. He never gave us foundations or fundamentals of ANYTHING. He also made the midterms and finals impossibly hard in which the WHOLE class complained yet he did nothing. He curved the midterms but NOT the final? Also, the whole class got in the F ranges during the midterms and final. He said he would give 20-30% of the class A’s yet only one person got an A !!??? He said that “if a professor makes his midterms and final easy, then he failed as a professor.” While I agree with him, i also disagree because what do you mean “failed as a professor”? You’re suppose to help us not intentionally make us fail. Please do yourselves a favor and do not take this guy. He made my life and other’s hell. I took time out of my day to write this review, you better know I’m trying to save you. Better be late one quarter by not taking Math 31B rather than taking it with this guy. I wish I had waited.
