Interfacial Phenomena

Description: Lecture, four hours; outside study, eight hours. Requisites: courses 82, 103, 105A, 105D. Introduction to fundamental physical phenomena occurring at interfaces and application of their knowledge to engineering problems. Fundamental concepts of interfacial phenomena, including surface tension, surfactants, interfacial thermodynamics, interfacial forces, interfacial hydrodynamics, and dynamics of triple line. Presentation of various applications, including wetting, change of phase (boiling and condensation), forms and emulsions, microelectromechanical systems, and biological systems. Letter grading.
