Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour. Requisites: courses M10B (may be taken concurrently), 125A. Students must receive grade of C or better to proceed to next course in sequence. Introduction to history, culture, and structure of Western music through selected topics, repertoires, and analytical techniques. Vernacular and cultivated styles from early Middle Ages to present. Letter grading.
