Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour. Enforced requisite: course M10C or M87. Students must receive grade of C or better to proceed to next course in sequence. Survey of Western music from its beginnings to 1700; examination of representative compositions within their cultural contexts and development of analytical methods appropriate to each repertory. Letter grading.
