Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Requisites: courses 1A, 1B, and 1C (or 1AH, 1BH, and 1CH), 110B. Interaction of light with matter; dispersion theory, oscillator strength, line widths, molecular scattering. Coherence theory, Kirchhoff formulation of diffraction theory, crystal optics, optical rotation, electro and magneto optical effects. Additional topics of fundamental or current interest. P/NP or letter grading.
