I took Chem 110 A (had to choose an arbitrary number and hence 599) with professor Bruinsma. Although he is a knowledgeable person, he could not convey the information to us; making constant mistakes and confusing us even more. I did not learn anything in this class and it was a waste of time, but I have heard worse things about the other professors for Chem 110 A.

This is for ASTRO 3: Absolutely take this course if you need a physical science GE! The subject matter is awesome: the nature of our universe. It covers everything from star formation to the big bang to the possibility of extraterrestrial life. This is definitely the most interesting GE I've had so far at UCLA. Professor Larkin has great lectures, which he also posts online. He is extremely nice, approachable, and most importantly, knowledgeable in the subject. Honestly, going to lecture is not necessary. Overall Grade: A Difficulty: Easy How the class is broken down: 20%- Lab (All work done during actual lab. TA's pretty much give you the answers if you ask for help) 40%- Two midterms worth 20% each. Larkin gives you helpful study guides which pretty much follow how the test questions turned out. 10%- Online quizzes. Five or six short 5 question quizzes based on reading. Very easy. He drops the lowest one. 30%- Cumulative final split evenly between material from the 3 parts of the quarter. Save your study guides from the first two midterms and you're in for an easy study session. Bottom Line: Read the chapters, read the lecture notes he posts online, and do the study guide questions and you're set for an easy A.

I took ASTRONOMY 3. I'm a freshman, and I just took this class for fall quarter. As for the professor himself, he's pretty funny, but as a previous poster said, he seems like he's on crack during lectures. His lectures tend to stray off from the textbook and what's on the midterms and finals so I ended up not going to a lot of them (his pace is a little slow in lectures as well). The book/information though was solid. I'm not a big science person, but I do have an interest in astronomy and the textbook teaches you SO MUCH about the world. I didn't ever think of reading the textbook as homework because it was THAT interesting. There's not too much reading, a medium amount, but it's so absorbing that it goes by pretty fast anyways. The midterms were easy - DO MASTERING ASTRONOMY. He pulls a bunch of his questions from there. Also, I learned this rather late, but apparently past midterms are good for the midterms as well. As for the finals, I didn't do quite well on that. I can't pinpoint how, but it seemed to be a bit different from what I expected based off on the midterms. I got an A- overall for the course. I did expect an A, but I definitely would blame myself for not doing enough work for the final instead of the class not being good. Definitely recommended to anyone thinking of taking this course.

ACTUAL COURSE: Astro 5 SPRING 2015 I LOVE Prof. McLean so much. So so much. He's the nicest person ever, so enthusiastic about what he teachers, and entertaining and sweet. He really does want you to succeed. Exams are SO easy as long as you go over the powerpoints. Seriously. I got like a 96 on the midterm and a 98 on the final. His powerpoints are very detailed and informative, so go over those several times and you should be great. I still recommend going to lecture because it makes it easer to stick, and he's entertaining and enthusiastic. You have 1 midterm and a final, as well as weekly online quizzes on CCLE (pretty easy, no time limit, and you don't have to complete them in one sitting). Had Alec Vinson for a TA and I liked him. He's clear, straightforward, and reasonable. Knows his stuff. You just sit there and he goes over main points, sometimes shows a video. Sign-in sheet for attendance. Almost no math. The math was beyond basic and easy, so don't worry if you're not a math person. Scientific concepts are both super interesting and easy to grasp. I love this class and I love the professor. Definitely take it if you want a fascinating, easy GE. Selling the textbook for HALF of the original price, so $50 (instead of $96). Good condition, no highlighting. While I have't personally taken any classes with this Professor, I--like many students--rely on Bruinwalk to tell me how to plan my schedule. It's really unfortunate that several people below have made offensive comments targeting Persian UCLA students, both attacking them verbally and generalizing an entire group of students part of the campus community. These comments are hurtful to Persians and non-Persians alike, and with UCLA's campus climate already so unstable, there is no reason to further amplify such a divide among us. Good luck with whichever professor you take. And be nice.
