Southeast Asian Politics
Description: Lecture, three or four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Requisite: course 50. Designed for juniors/seniors. Survey of political environment in major Southeast Asian states. Use of comparative analysis to address major problems confronting region, including democratization, economic growth, drug trade, deforestation, and security threats. Letter grading.

I actually liked him. I found his lectures to be a bit all over the place, but I enjoyed his stories and you can tell how knowledgeable and passionate he is about china. I knew nothing about china coming into the class and managed to get an A-. The midterm was way out of left field, which was kind of annoying. the papers were pretty hard and it was important to provide a well thought out argument. DONT just summarize. The final was also pretty difficult and I busted my butt on that thing! Overall though, I felt I learned a lot and was glad i took the course.

Prof. Ross is organized and approachable. Lectures are straightforward, but be warned, he uses up every second of the hour and 50 minutes of class. You have to keep up with readings, trying to cram them all in last minute is near impossible. Although I received an A, this was definitely one of my harder courses. The midterm study guide and final study guide had 2 pages worth of terms that we had to know, and he only tests on about 8 of them. The major portions of the exam are short answer so you have to be able to write a decent-sized paragraph for each term. This wouldn't be hard but for the sheer volume of terms he gives and information you learn from both lectures and the readings. Part of the final is also an essay. Overall tough class, but a good grade is very attainable.
