Make sure you go to discussion, more than anything! Your TA will work through all relevant problems with you and explain the concepts in more detail so that everyone understands it. Bawn's online lectures were informative and I think the concepts covered in this class are interesting and useful. Work through all the practice problems before tests and you will do just fine.

I agree with the person below me. Chwe's ratings are low, but that's mostly attributed to the material because it can get difficult if you don't go to class or don't pay attention. Weekly homework isn't too bad if you know how to get help and aren't afraid to get help. I struggled a lot with it in the beginning and even though a good number of my answers weren't correct, the T.A. still gave me the full point (0, 0.5, and 1 are the possible points) for every single homework I turned in. It sure helps your grade in the end, if you need a little boost. Chwe is very open to helping people and welcomes any question even in class. He's not bothered by having to go through the problem again and slower, which isn't the case for many professors. He makes jokes sometimes that I found funny and made lecture a little less tiresome. The midterm and final are structured to be difficult, but he literally has so many past midterms and finals posted dating back all the way to the early 2000's or mid 2000's, I forget. If you practice these, you should be well prepared. There's also a curve, depending on how the rest of the class did but honestly it can only benefit you. You have to be really, really lost and not giving any effort to get a bad grade because the grade distribution is really generous. The final was supposed to be 3 hours, but because 95% of the class wasn't finished, he gave us another hour and stayed. What other professor would even consider staying an extra hour to give students more time?? Anyways, Chwe is great in my opinion, the class is without a doubt challenging, but it helps that he's a good professor. Good luck! Go to class and start studying at least a week in advance for the midterm and final!

I have very mixed feelings about this class.
Barry is probably one of the most genuine professors at UCLA. He is unashamedly himself during lectures, but this, unfortunately, comes across as extremely confusing . This class was an overwhelming experience because the professor only talked about what interested him; he didn't take a whole lot of time to teach the basics of game theory. Barry is undoubtedly a brilliant mathematician and game theorist. He just had a lot of difficulty breaking it down into simpler concepts and making it clear. Barry said at the beginning of the quarter that the textbook was mandatory, but he didn't actually use it (DON'T BUY IT).
Another downside to this class is that you have absolutely no idea how you are performing. The TAs try to be as up front as possible with you, but Barry doesn't even tell them how he's grading the class. The midterm grade was determined by quintiles- the top 20% get As, the next 20% get Bs, and so on. Barry told us at the beginning that we would get put in a quintile relative to how the entire class performed. During sections, though, the TAs said that they were told to put us in quintiles according to ONLY their sections. Because of this confusion, I had no clear idea of how I was performing in the class.
Without my TA, Cybele Kappos, I would understand very little about game theory. I probably would have flunked the midterm.
If you take this class with Barry, expect funny, but confusing, lectures. Expect to learn everything from your TA. Expect to watch Kathy Bawn's pre-recorded lectures on YouTube. Expect to watch GameTheory101 on YouTube.

Professor Roberts gave engaging lectures and always asked if clarification was needed for any topic he had covered. He is funny at times and you do not feel uneasy asking him questions for anything from the class material to your grade. My TA Alex Munoz was amazing and I would recommend everyone get him if you can and consider taking Professor Roberts for this class as he makes the material fairly easy to understand. The only bummer is that I was less than 0.1% away from an A+ but only got an A. Regardless, this class was amazing and it is likely you will end with an A and if not the worst you will get is an A-. Try your best and do not slack off!
