Psych 118-I have never before felt compelled to write a review but this time I felt the need to because this class is horrible... I received a C after studying like crazy and truly trying my best--the grade distribution you see above is truly accurate...Professor Blasidell is a very discouraging teacher who makes you feel like a complete idiot when you ask a question...isn't the point of a teacher to foster learning and encourage student to learn? He does the complete opposite and instead makes an otherwise interesting class completely boring with a terrible curve. I have never met a man more condescending than him--AVOID at all costs

Actually took: Sex and Gender cluster M72A, M72B, M72C in 2014-2015 academic year Dr. Haselton was the previous coordinator of the cluster, but Gildersleeve replaced her when she went to do research. Definitely recommend this cluster! Made me so much more open-minded toward gender/the world and thought it was cool to have such a variety of professors alternating off. Extremely relevant to real life. Mostly girls and queer dudes in the class – come on straight dudes, we need y'all on board too! Since it's a freshman-geared cluster where you're with the same people for two quarters and then a much smaller low-key 20-person spring seminar, they're big on developing good study skills and are very sensitive to student feedback :) Professors included on team: Gildersleeve in psychology, Arnold in biology (don't let his lectures get to you, the TA's usually made very good review powerpoints for the mandatory 2-hour discussion section), Haselton (winter only) in psychology, Saguy in sociology, Vilain (interesting character...) in medicine. Each has a distinct personality which students would love or hate across the board. They all influenced my thinking in some way and I wouldn't say I heavily disliked any in particular. TA: Melissa Fales. Extremely helpful and accessible, a little harsh for essay grading but taught me a lot. Took the cluster herself back in the day! Other TA's on the very diverse TA team aren't too shabby either, though. The essay topics can get tricky at times to navigate. You may lose most points here. See your TA not just once to discuss, but multiple times. Spring seminars are fun and super interesting and so much more laid-back (no exams just a final paper and weekly quizzes, if that). I had Dr. Murray for Courtship and the Brain but he's leaving UCLA next year. Absolute shame, he was so chill. The fall and winter final exams are only 20% of your grade, and only take 2 hours, so that's nice that they're pretty low stakes. Out of the three quizzes (lowest one is dropped) of the quarter, each question counts as one point of your final grade, so take these seriously just by actually allotting yourself time to study for them. Did like 2 readings all quarter and still got A's hehe (but they're so interesting. I was working a full-time job and couldn't read, but you all should!). Also, lectures are mandatory so I attended all of them and forged a dope study group. Suggest the same.

class: Comm 111 Professor Malamuth is pretty awesome. Sometimes he gets a little boring because he reads right off the PowerPoint slides but he makes the class entertaining and enjoyable. I received a bad grade in this class because I REALLY slacked off and didn't keep up with the readings, but if you put in some effort you won't have any trouble. This was probably my favorite class because EVERYTHING you learn can be applied to your everyday life...this class really teaches you valuable information for dealing with conflicts in your life. Take this class and learn something important

I took LS2 with PROFESSOR Schein. I was a little off put at first, because he was very unapproachable outside of class. I called him Mr. Schein by mistake the first day.. DO NOT DO THAT, he made it clear that was not his name and was not very nice about it. I have heard similar experiences about him being unapproachable by several other students as well. However, if addressed in a group he seems to be nicer, and he is a good professor. I did not see any sexism, as people suggest, nor did I think the class was overly difficult. He expects you to know the information, but his lectures are his main focus. I didnt read the book, and did considerably above average simply by thoroughly listening to his lectures. Do not be fooled when he says at the beginning of the course that he only asks conceptual questions though. He asks a TON of memory questions. I.E. how many years did civilization occur or how big is the average cell size he said in class. I also took LS89, the honors part, and he was WAY more approachable there. He is extremely knowledgeable in a lot of subjects so his random rants are actually pretty interesting. Overall: He is a good lecturer He is slightly unapproachable outside of class Not overly difficult He is pretty funny && Brian was an AWESOME TA, who knew a lot and was extremely helpful (I recommend going to the TA's office hour instead of Schein's because he is scary) DO take the class, and DO show up to the class, because the lectures will get you an A.
