Spring 2017 - I enjoyed this class. Prof. Elsesser was very clear. Her tests were reasonable and were mainly based on lecture. I got an A, but I took good notes and read the book. If you don't pay attention in lecture, I would definitely recommend reading the book thoroughly as most of what she teaches is in the book.

Summer 2017 - Professor is extremely engaging and enthusiastic making the subject material more interesting. The class is very interactive with group discussions to better understand topics. Pay attention to lecture examples to do well on the exams. Exams are about half short answer, and half lecture based (70% lecture, 30% textbook). Be sure to memorize all of the powerpoint slides to do well on the short answer because she can be very specific of what she is asking. Also daily quizzes based off the textbook reading before class.

This was the hardest class I've taken at UCLA so far and it really shouldn't be because the subject matter is not difficult. The Prof. is completely inept in "teaching" the students what to know, she simply throws all the subject matter at you and expects you to know everything. I couldn't believe her tests either, the questions were very specific to the book and by the way the final is cumulative and you must remember Ch 1-5 along with 6-10/13, oh and the films we watched in class and her lecture notes. I couldn't believe it when the T.A. told us she had to fight for the "short answer" questions to be given to us or else we all would have failed. And on average those "short answer" questions were at least 2 pages so u had about 6 pages total for 3 questions along with 55 questions of hardcore "detail-oriented" material. This class sucked and I can't believe this wasn't even a major requirement for most people in the class, like me. So I def. would NOT recommend anyone taking this class unless you like a teacher who expects you to know everything and acts snooty toward students who are frustrated about what to study. My worst class yet! Just wait for the other prof. to come back and teach this course!!

I really enjoyed this class. We watched 6 films throughout the course of the class. They were very entertaining and the commentaries were an easy way to earn points. The extremely short papers we wrote were also a source of easy points. The midterm and final were composed of multiple choice questions. It is critical to read all of the material assigned. A close reading of the material will ensure a good grade in the class. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone. It was very informative and interesting.
