Using Quantitative Methods to Understand Social Problems and their Potential Solutions
Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, two hours. Requisite: course 60 or equivalent introductory statistics course. Course in R preferred. Introduction to multivariate quantitative research models used to answer questions in social science. Students gain practical and intuitive understanding of multivariate regression, program evaluation, and research methods, and apply knowledge by analyzing real world data. Focus on practical analytic tools using statistical software. Letter grading.

Spring 2025 - Overall, a VERY unclear class in terms of teaching and expectations academically. Cannot remember much I learned and I think it was his first quarter teaching, granted. Honestly, having taken multiple statistics classes, material was still all over the place. Our exams did not teach what was taught or talked about. TA was helpful though, but I think that's about it. Would not recommend taking this class with Steinert, though he was willing to talk to students in office hours, which I appreciated

Winter 2020 - This class started out very rough and unorganized. The professor would move through material very fast and the assigned homework would not follow the same material as the one presented during lecture. However, she did listen to our concerns as a class and made some adjustments to help us succeed. There is an in-class midterm and final, in addition, there are problem sets assigned throughout the quarter which involve R Studio (no R Studio material is covered in lecture). The problem sets are much more complicated than the midterm and final but they do help when studying. I think the main problems with the class was the grading process and the way it was organized. Our respective TAs did not grade our work so when going to office hours it was sometimes useless because their help was not sufficient sometimes if another TA graded our homework.
