Introduction to Danish Cinema

Description: Seminar, three hours. Introduction to history of cinema in Denmark, as well as to some fundamental concepts in study of film. Deliberately broad and historically centered approach to development of cinema in Denmark rather than focus on films of particular directors or topics. Theoretical readings from important critics, including Kracauer, Bazin, Metz, and Chatman, along with several directed exercises, to develop vocabulary and critical method for discussing films in general and Danish cinema in particular. Other readings include selections from Hjort, Sandberg, Tangherlini, and other Scandinavian theorists. Concurrently scheduled with course C263A. P/NP or letter grading.
