Ghosts, Spirits, and Witches: Supernatural in Southeast Asia
Description: Lecture, two hours; discussion, one hour. From magical tattoos, tree spirits, and faith healing to angry ghosts and disemboweled flying vampires, exploration of fantastic supernatural world of Southeast Asia through folk tales, urban myths, published accounts, popular films, and other media. Study of wide variety of supernatural creatures and local specialists that populate imagination of this diverse region. Exploration also of unique regional concepts of power, morality, and justice that animate and frame Southeast Asian attitudes towards supernatural phenomena in modern world. Concurrently scheduled with course C220. P/NP or letter grading.

Winter 2025 - Professor Paredes is a wonderful instructor, and this class is really cool. Every week, you just have to do some light reading before the Tuesday lectures (like 15 pages max) and do a short 10-minute in-class assignment on Thursdays. For the weekly in-class assignment, you just need to write on a half-sheet of paper what you learned that week. You could also draw a picture that relates to the stuff that was talked about that week. I ended up just drawing pictures of whatever spirit/ghost we learned that week, and got full points every time. You also have to do two projects: one group project and one individual one. Both are pretty easy. For the group project, you need to make a 5-minute presentation about your assigned ghost/spirit. For the individual project due during finals week, you need to write a paper about a film that uses a ghost/spirit from Southeast Asia as a motif. Max 6 pages double spaced. Professor Paredes is an extremely understanding professor. She's always there to talk if you ever run into any problems with any readings or with your projects. On the first day of class, she literally said, "If you guys ever need help, or if you feel overwhelmed, come talk to me. Email me. You're not being annoying. It is literally MY JOB to help you guys."
