SOC GEN 164
Ethics in Health and Research
Description: Lecture, three hours. How should life-saving organs be allocated in context of scarcity? What happens when doctor disagrees with patient on best treatment? Should researchers be allowed to experiment on human beings? Although medicine has always been faced with life-or-death decisions, new challenges arise in light of dramatic advances of biomedicine in 21st century. New possibilities for cures come with new moral issues. Biomedical research is full of promises, yet faces many ethical difficulties. Examination of complexity of decision making in bioethics by articulating point of views of all actors engaged in those decisions at local and international levels--doctors, nurses, patients, families, health policymakers, researchers, and citizens. Focus on case studies with reliance on philosophical essays and material from contemporary media. Letter grading.

Fall 2021 - Definitely an enjoyable class with interesting and relevant subject material (bioethics, eugenics, epigenetics, etc.). Workload was not too bad - weekly readings, group project, three quizzes, clicker questions, and final research paper but all very doable. Le Goff is very knowledgeable about the subject material and helpful for editing work!

Fall 2023 - This class was genuinely interesting and also a breeze. Grading is divided into 4 main components: a paper topic 2-pages due Week 4, a rough draft (8-12 pages) due Week 7, a final draft (12+ pages) due finals week, and a participation paper (2 pages) due by the end of the quarter detailing how you participated. There are also weekly discussions on lecture material but they're super easy and not graded themselves but included in the participation paper. For the main paper, you can also opt to do a project, either solo or in a group. The grading was easy and reasonable and the assignments were a bit daunting but since it's all you have to worry about all quarter it is totally manageable and the professor and TA give great feedback on your paper draft.
