Description: Seminar, three hours. Limited to juniors/seniors. Use of history of tobacco and cigarette smoking to explore important themes in sociology, history, and culture. History of tobacco from its roots in Native American culture, its contribution to foundation of European colonies in New World, its cultural incorporation in western Europe, its role in rise of industrial way of life and health consequences, and its demise as legitimate soft drug for modern urban people. Letter grading.
