How to Fight Social Stigma with Art

Description: Seminar, one hour. Can art inspire real social change? How can we make positive impact on world in this social and political climate? Examination of these questions through productive dialogue and taking creative and artistic action. Foundation of understanding of stigma and how it affects different intersections of human experience and identity. Gathering of inspiration by experiencing arts activist responses to HIV/AIDS crisis in U.S. and many other stigmatized circumstances. Discussion of media and methodology used in this activism and their effectiveness in dispelling social stigma. Presentation of creative responses to stigma in world and our lives. P/NP grading. Facilitated by Kelly Gluckman, with David H. Gere as faculty mentor.
