ah..the legendary Arieh Saposnik..what can I say about Professor Saposnik, I love the guy. Everything is gravy with him until u need a letter of recommendation, a grade change, or anything that involves 1 on 1 time. I took 3 of his courses..received A's/A- in all of them. Chased after him for 2 months to get a letter of recommendation..and well I still haven't gotten it, maybe ill get an early Hannukah gift? who knows.
whoever says saposik is an easy A needs to shut up real quick you just got super lucky thats all. This is just another class where the reader/TA ruins it for everyone. i took him for fall 2011 and winter 2012 JS 144 and 142 and i ended up with a B+ in fall and a B in winter. I know i can EASILY go agrue with im about my grade becuase ive done it before and he will change it because he knows the TA messed up. I got an 80 on my midterm took it to him and he changed it to a 90 and i didnt even argue 1 word he just re-read it. The only reason i dont go is because it literally takes MONTHS to track him down literally you have a better chance of showing up at his house. Overall its a meaningless class and his lectures put u to sleep, you dont really have to go at all just buy the book and write your papers off it. I do not recommend it though, save ur time and if you feel injustice has been done, goodluck avenging it.
The person who posted on 04/16/2012 is simply bitter that he/she did not receive an A/A- like the majority of people in Saposnik's class. What makes you think you automatically deserve an A? Your sense of entitlement is truly unbearable. Look at Sasposnik's grade distribution---it's fair! It's unfortunate that you have an external locus of control and attribute other people's good grades to "luck," but when it comes to YOUR grade, you supposedly worked so hard and were treated unjustly. Even if you did work hard, college grades are not determined by effort. Suck it up.
One of the worst professors I have ever taken at UCLA. Very unapproachable and does not offer to help or give you an accurate explanation as to what exactly he is looking for in his papers. Overall he is frustrating and you will not know your grade or how you are doing until grades come out, he cancelled about 5 or 6 classes as well as his office hours, and when he did reschedule his office hours people would find out by word of mouth, never responds to e-mails, and just sucks. I came here specifically to warn you all don't take him and if you do, good luck cause your not going to get that A even with the "extra credit." Joke.
Jewish 142 and 144
If I could take all my UCLA classes with one professor and earn my B.A in History, I would choose Professor Saposnik! He is the kindest man in the world. As an African American that knew nothing about Jewish History, I found this class to be so interesting that I took part one and two. The required reading is normal for UCLA, mid term, paper and final exam. The final consist of I.D. questions, not to hard; the paper is usually about a film you choose based on a long list of selections. He also incorporates films w/ lecture, guest speakers and your invited to tons of events, which he offers extra credit. Advise: attend lectures so you can understand the importance of Israel, Jewish Nationalism and many other historical events. You will enjoy this class, I promise!
I took Jewish Studies 142 (Zionism) and 144 (Modern Israel) with Saposnik. I don't know what the poster below is talking about. It's actually pretty easy to get an 'A' in his class if you go to class, read the material, and write thoughtful papers. Saposnik cares about his students and is very flexible in terms of extending deadlines. He does take a while to grade papers, but he's willing to re-grade it if you feel like you didn't deserve the grade you received. He even offers extra credit for going to events and writing a short summary. If you are complaining about his classes, then you don't belong at UCLA, period. DON'T BLAME SAPOSNIK FOR YOUR WRITING SKILLS (OR LACK THEREOF).
