I don't think Dr. Jaffe's overall rating for this class does him justice. If you're not a fan of integrated learning platforms (this class relies heavily on TopHat--look it up) or exams making up most of your grade, this may not be the class for you. But Dr. Jaffe is a great lecturer and he's very approachable if you have questions about the material.
After having heard horrible reviews about Jaffe I went into the class with low expectations. I am happy to say that I think Jaffe has made great strides towards improving his class, and I honestly disagree with a lot of the reviews I’ve read previously. I didn't go to lecture a majority of the time and I am still ending the class within the A/B range. I read horror stories about tests but was pleasantly surprised by how manageable they were, and Jaffe allowed us a cheat sheet (front and back) as well as gave us all the required formulas. The workload is manageable and the class isn’t too fast paced; modules are generally quite helpful. The one thing I will say is that it is difficult to follow the lectures if you don’t already know the information on them–if you know the information prior it is helpful so read the book and do the modules before class. Use the text and personal trainer for practice. The one thing I will say is that the TAs were absolutely horrible (I had Bufford and Kadambi) Section was rarely helpful, and furthermore they had an absolutely unapproachable air to them, thus I never sought outside help. Every review session I attended was dreadful, as it was unorganized and oftentimes the information was incorrect. There was a 50/50 shot of the BASIC CALCULATIONS being wrong. Then when students would raise their hand to point out a mistake it would create the utmost hostility.
Regardless, do not let reviews of Jaffe freak you out... He's a really cool guy and not a bad professor at all who IS taking steps to improving the class (new TAs would be great). Overall I sense great improvement.
Jaffe is a great professor who demonstrates his passion for teaching and his students' success in the class! His lectures are engaging and clear. The first midterm was easy, which made me think I didn't have to study as much for the second midterm. However, the second midterm rocked my world. It was SO hard and I was extremely crunched for time! We do get a cheat sheet now for the midterms which is nice!
Overall, this class WAS difficult, but, that is not a bad thing.
With Jaffe, you have to come to class having already read the chapter/done all of the practice material. If you do that, his lectures are fantastic and really help to refine your understanding of the concepts. If you don't, you will be sitting there for an hour wondering what the hell is happening and if everyone else silently looking up at him is as lost as you. I attended class both ways, and frankly, after one or two lectures of not being prepared, I never went back to not learning the concepts beforehand.
I think my class felt that Jaffe should have done a better job at teaching us the material, but I don't think many of them took it upon themselves to make sure they were using all of the tools he actually provided for each and every lecture. The quarter is fast and hard, but if you make sure you stay on top of things, the information builds logically and consistently throughout. Prior to this course, I had barely done any math at all over the past 10 years. Now, I feel pretty confident in my ability to understand and analyze research papers and the statistical information they present. All in all, I would say that, if you want to actually learn stats, take it with Jaffe. If all you care about is an A, go with Enders.
I feel like I learned a lot but not from the professor. I had to read the book consistently as well as learn from Youtube and Khan Academy. Jaffe is a funny guy and very cool in office hours but a horrible professor. He wastes so much time talking about his own life and the wording of the problem rather than the equations needed to solve the problem. The class was unorganized and he and his TA's made many mistakes that stressed us out. I highly recommend avoiding this class at all costs, he is not a good professor.
This class was very tough. Make sure you learn the material very quickly as the class is quite fast paced and the concepts build on each other. Honestly, the textbook saved my life in this class.
I am selling the textbook, in pretty new condition, for $100, but price is negotiable. Text me at 310-918-8113.
Hands down, the worst professor I have ever had. I don't want to beat a dead horse but all the previous reviews are accurate. Top hat is terrible, lectures are confusing, TAs had bad attitudes. I learned 90% of the material on my own through the text book and YouTube. The 2nd midterm was a circus, professor Jaffe didn't even bother showing up to administer it. The amount of cheating I witnessed during that midterm was just crazy which ended up skewing the grades for that exam. This class destroyed my academic confidence. Avoid his class, even if that means you have to wait until next quarter to take it. Exams are 90% of your grade for this class.
