You can really tell that Professor Finch is all about critical thinking. If you're not a fan of that then I don't know how you're going to survive in her class. She encourages critical thought and if you're able to express your thoughts/opinions clearly as well as reference the theories in the readings you should do very well when it comes to the hw/tests.

The classroom structure consists of mainly class discussion so be prepared to do a decent amount of talking. She wants you to be able to chime in on every topic to show that you're actually thinking about the concepts presented in class and in the readings.

i took her for WS Power. Her class wasn't too difficult you just have to be willing to write your best, no bullshitting papers because you'll definitely get that lackluster grade. She separated the class into two groups and each group had a 2-3 pg paper due every other week based on the readings done that week (she usually gave essay prompts). I think you had to have 5 done by the end of the quarter. A midterm and a Final both were similar and final wasn't cumulative. I suggest her class if you wanna expand your brain capacity.

Professor Finch is one of the best professors I have had at UCLA. Each class was very productive and I learned so much from both her lectures and my peers. That is a special skill of only a few professors at UCLA, where class discussion is facilitated, welcomed and insightful. I mostly appreciated the format of the class and how Professor Finch always brought the readings to today's relevance and connected things we have normalized in our everyday lives to legacies of power structures reified overtime.

One of my favorite classes and makes me so happy that i'm minoring in gender studies. She is so passionate with what she teaches and often brings current events to the class and relates them to the subjects we're talking about.

Professor Finch is a gem. She really knows how to teach a class. She's very eloquent in the way that she speaks and she's great a facilitating group discussion. She doesn't pressure anyone to participate but she poses questions and allows for students to weigh in with their own opinions. I liked how she incorporated current news events into the course's themes because it made what we were learning about that much more relevant as we were seeing real world examples. The readings were interesting but I honestly stopped doing them after the first week because she goes over them in depth in class. We had 2 papers and a final exam. The first paper was 6-8 pages and we chose 1 out several available prompts comparing and contrasting two authors. The second paper was supposed to be 7-10 pages, but she gave it to us late in the quarter so she cut the page count down to 3-5 pages. The prompts were the same with the comparing/contrasting. The final exam consisted of ID terms and 2 short-essays that once again compared/contrasted two authors. However, you couldn't use the same combination of authors to answer a prompt as one of your previous papers, but that makes sense. After taking this class, I really feel like I learned something valuable about power dynamics throughout time and across space. I would love to take a course with Finch again.
