Actual Class: LS30A

Garfinkel is a great professor that really cares about his students. The material isn't necessarily easy, but he does of good job of making you feel like it is. I have virtually no math background and I was able to get an A on his midterm. We haven't taken the final yet, and I don't feel as prepared, but in any event -- I think he prepares his students well. There are a lot of resources available to you and the TAs are VERY helpful.

Grading is also flexible. He gave us the opportunity to drop our midterm completely if we do better on the final.

The only thing that's really difficult about this class is using the Sage program. Otherwise, I highly recommend taking his class.

Potential students for LS30B-

Dr. Garfinkel is the most amazing professor as well as incredibly individual that I have had the pleasure of encountering at UCLA, and he is one of the few reasons why I have not transferred to another school yet. First and foremost, let me preface my later comments by stating that your life will be changed completely, and your views on medicine will be profoundly influenced.

I used to be a student of neuroscience, but now am on my way to pursuing a more computation-based pathway in engineering. His class was absolutely phenomenal, and his lectures were thoroughly engaging. I would like to add, however, that he is indeed, incredibly difficult to approach, and it is fairly difficult to reach him via email due to his busy schedule, as mentioned in earlier comments. This does NOT mean that he does not care about your learning- quite the contrary, actually. Go to his office hours, and ask him any questions for clarifications. He is an absolutely amazing individual, and once you take his class, you will see that all the reviews on this man are in fact, true.

Many reviews on Bruinwalk are written by people who 1) either HATE the professor, or 2) LOVE the professor, and I will admit that I am the latter. However, I have not once seen a professor with THIS many reviews all essentially saying the same thing.

Take his class, and you will surely not regret it.

LS30 isn't listed as an option on the course part so ignore the Physiological Science: 198c part. lt doesn't matter if you're a south campus major, or a north campus major. I was a north campus major who enrolled in Dr. Garfinkel's LS30B class, and let me tell you one thing: no memorization of equations. That's right. Deep understanding of Fourier transformations (linear algebra), chaos theory, and dynamical systems without the fuss of knowing how to memorize equations. Heck, he even provided us with the quadratic formula during the final! I loved going to lecture each and every single day, and Dr. Garfinkel genuinely cares about student learning and progress. This class changed my life, and I think that it will change yours as well.
