Winter 2025 - I took this class as a sophomore— it was my first upper division course and I hadn’t taken LS107 beforehand. Nevertheless, this class was very engaging and the more complicated concepts were thoroughly explained. I really recommend going to Professor Lusis’s office hours— he was really helpful at explaining the more complicated concepts and is very responsive to his email if you have further questions. It’s undeniable that the professors leading this class care a lot about the students and making the material engaging. The lecture slides and recordings are posted, but there are mandatory lecture quizzes at the beginning of each lecture. The discussion sections were really helpful in explaining the papers, but there is a mandatory quiz at the beginning of each discussion (makeup quizzes allowed). The midterms and final are open notes/computer (just not google search or ai use allowed). The tests were challenging but there were curves and if you come well prepared with organized notes you’ll be fine. I really recommend this class, it was very engaging and interesting!

Winter 2020 - Look, the professor is nice, but...the class sucks. The tests are hard, the papers are difficult to read, and even though I've gone to office hours and discussion. Nothing about my grade change. The only way I even had a chance to pass was that the coronavirus shut down the school and the final became take home. Even then, I don't know if that was enough to save my grade. The only reason I took this this class was because a different class I was enrolled in said I was under qualified to take it. I wish I stayed in the other class. Look, if you really, really want to learn about genetics, if you have a passion for it, take the class. If you're just taking it to fulfill a requirement, DO NOT take the class. It is not worth it. Especially if you don't like the topic and don't want to wake up at 8AM to do it.
