Professor Purves did her best to make online teaching as effective as possible. She moved around deadlines and listened to feedback and adjusted the way she taught class. She even found pdfs of every single reading (so you didn't have to spend any money at all in this class!). She's, like, mom funny too.
Content-wise the class is really interesting, the readings are all mostly easy and entertaining, and the grading was pretty gentle.
The class has two vocab quizzes, a short writing assignment, a longer paper, and an (optional this time) final. It sounds like a lot, but nothing is that difficult. Definitely recommend!

Honestly professor Purves is GREAT. Took this class online during spring 2020, so things might be different in person. There are many books we read in this course, but they're honestly all really interesting and she's very helpful if you don't understand the readings. She was always very understanding of the issues her students faced during this quarter which was great. There was no midterm, instead around that time we had a short (1-2 page double spaced) writing assignment which was to prepare us for an essay later. She had a pre and post quiz for every lecture but they were just based on completion. It's not difficult to get an A in this class. She also made the final optional and if you took the final it wouldn't hurt your grade. SHe provided pdfs of all the readings, you didn't have to buy books, but I still bought 2 books that we spent the most time on (personally I preferred to read from a physical book). I didn't participate in section because im shy lol but i wasn't marked off that many points. honestly this is a really amazing class and I would definitely recommend you to take it if you can.

Lecture: Purves is one of the best lecturers I've had. By making mythology more of a story she creates a very entertaining lecture.

Homework: There are short homework assignments before and after each lecture, and they are credit/no credit. However, because you have to do six a week they are VERY easy to forget to do, especially with classes online. There were two essay assignments. The assignments themselves were quite easy, but my TA graded them quite harshly, which hurt my grade a lot.

Exams: The midterm and the final were both quite detailed, so you really need to know your stuff to do well. It is not enough to simply know the information because she asks analytical questions as well.

Tips: I thought this class would be an easy GE, so I did not put much effort into it. This ended up being my most problematic class because of this. Stay on top of the pre and post lecture assignments. There are a ton of readings, so I recommend using online summaries instead of investing a ton of time into reading entire works.

*** COVID-19 Review ***
I cannot recommend Purves enough for this class. With Spring being remote, we had to use 2018 Bruincasts with some in-person lectures, but damn was this interesting and informative! She makes the material so much more manageable, but as other reviews said you really should read all of the texts (although I did not).
We could opt out of the final, but apart from that it was a short 2-page writing assignment, a 4-6 page paper, the midterm, final, and discussion participation. I love Purves' enthusiasm and dedication to teach, and she was an amazing addition to the class and learning more about Greek mythology.

This is one of the best classes I've taken. Professor Purves is wonderful, and I really enjoyed the content. She put in quite a bit of effort to make the transition to online learning as seamless as possible. I did find myself falling behind on readings but skimming through and reading summaries was enough to get by towards the end of the quarter. I would definitely recommend this course, especially if you're interested in Greek and Roman myth

Purves is a very engaging and accommodating professor. Taking this class online was amazing because she found PDFs of all the required readings, uploaded both Bruincast and did live lectures, and the material was very fun! You do have to participate but the TAs are also very accommodating and want you to understand the material. The short writing assignment, two quizzes, paper, and optional final were all very doable. Highly recommend this class and professor! Purves was also really funny and it is clear she loves what she does.

Professor Purves is a really engaging lecturer, and this class is absolutely fascinating. She's really passionate about the subject, and she's so thorough about everything that even if you know nothing about mythology, you'll have a great time. She's also really open to conversing with students; I emailed back and forth with her a number of times talking about modern myth.
If you take notes on what she says in class (and watch the Bruincasts for the lectures you miss), you'll ace the tests and quizzes. There are a number of required readings, but honestly I didn't even do them and everything still turned out fine.
As long as you remember the general themes she mentions in class and use them to link different myths together, you'll get an A+ on the midterm and final, although, be warned, there is a lot of writing involved.

Really really good professor. She makes her lectures really interesting, and she is really caring for the students. She also welcomes questions and different opinions, and would willingly discuss her perspectives on your theories.
The class itself is not very easy for beginners of Mythology, but Professor Purves has made it much less daunting for me and much easier for me to adapt to tons of reading as an international student.

Grading wise (because I know you may care about that), Professor Purves is very fair, and as long as you go to her lectures or watch her bruincast and actually put some effort in, you would end up with a satisfactory grade, but be advised that you need to spend time to learn all these stuff because the tests are basically analysis to characters, plots in the assigned readings and some of the posted images of artworks went through in class.
