As a hard stem major, this class was a cakewalk where you don't really have to study or anything and just get an A (tests are open-book, open-note). Assignments are annoying but can finish in maybe 15-30 minutes. He really stresses that you shouldn't be taking this class for a grade and should be using it to better yourself and everything and kind of actively shames you into dropping the class if you're not their to truly take away things from the class? idk it felt a bit too serious in that regard which kind of made me enjoy the class less. Although I did take away a few things from the class, the lectures drag on and on. That being said, in an incredibly stressful quarter taking the time to reflect on myself and meditate, use less social media before bed, and other intevnetions genuinely probably did help my mental health quite a bit and I'll definitely try to continue doing them throughout my life. Also Hui, my TA, was amazing and I genuinely enjoyed coming to her sections to kind of reinforce what we were talking about in class! Would take again for the easiness more than the content.
Outstanding professor, absolutely manageable workload. Interesting class and the best option for those looking to fulfill life science GE. I highly recommend reading his book, it's cheap and helpful. His tests are open note and online, I struggled more on the midterm but got an A on the final. If you know the slides you WILL get an A on the final.
Please take this class. It is so interesting, manageable, fun, and helpful. I apply the things I learn in this class to my everyday life. Professor Korb is a gem and I want only good things to happen to him forever.
Very okay class. Everything we learned about felt obvious & straight forward. You can pass the class by Control F-ing your way through the powerpoints on the exams.
He's a terrible lecturer but a nice guy. If there's one thing he'll do, it's belabor a point. I could show up to class 20 minutes late and he'd somehow be on the second slide.
Don't choose Imri's discussion - it's unbearable.
Great life science GE for anyone, a far amount of work considering you have to complete interventions and log them almost every day. Work is easy and lectures are interesting if you really pay attention.
This class is awesome. I have learned so much stuff about the human brain that is actually applicable to my life. The lectures are kind of long and tedious, but not really vital to the tests, I just find them interesting. Discussion attendance matters but they usually end early and are pretty quick paced. Perfect workload, 10/10 class.
Bar none the best class I've taken at UCLA. It's the kind of class that has incredible real-world value, where if you put in effort into learning the material and techniques, you will literally improve your life. This class has no "gotchas," it's not designed to trick you, and you learn invaluable insights into the mind along the way. It's abundantly clear that Dr. Korb genuinely cares about his students, and his book, while not necessary, is a great read if the topics interest you. For all the qualms we can have about UCLA and the bureaucracy of the institution, this is the kind of class that makes you think how incredible of an opportunity it is to attend a place like this. If only every course was like this one...
If you want an easy GE grade, you can get that. If you want a life-changing college experience, you can get that too. 10/10 would recommend for everyone.
BEST CLASS AT UCLA. Easiest science GE ever. SOOOO interesting,, made me consider studying neuroscience. Dr. Korb is the best, so sweet, so funny, very smart. Overall best guy. You won't regret!!
BEST CLASS I'VE TAKEN AT UCLA!!! Professor Korb is such a good teacher. All of his lectures are clear and concise. The exams are straightforward and never have material that hadn't been discussed in lecture or in the readings. I took this class as a GE and I don't regret it at all. There was only one midterm and it was relatively easy. Korb gives us a study guide, and if you can fill it out without too much help you're pretty much guaranteed an A on the exams. I would recommend including a short description of the readings on your study guide too because there will also be questions about that. All of the assignments were "weekly interventions" where you conduct a mini experiment on yourself and then write a small writeup due before your discussion section. Professor Korb gives you and outlines and an example of what these logs should look like, and the TAs are super super helpful if you have any questions. The final paper is one huge log where you compare the results of the interventions that you've completed so far to one outcome variable. The instructions for the final paper aren't as clear as the weekly log, but follow the same type of direction. Again, if you have any questions the TAs are so so kind and are always willing to help you. My TA was Amanda, and wow she was so amazing I literally don't know how to put it in words. Participation is also important in determining your final grade which means you have to show up for discussion section and actively participate. At first I was worried how it would go especially with everything being online, but there is plenty of opportunities to participate and contribute to sections. This class was genuinely interesting. There was a time where I would refuse to consider a science major, but this class really made me consider it.
The prof is great and the class is interesting. This is the only class I haven't gotten an A in unfortunately. TA couldn't explain why she took off points for my final paper (randomly took off a ton for the intro and none for the remainder of the paper). The material itself is interesting and the assignments are straight-forward. I would suggest taking to Korb about your final paper so you don't end up surprised by what the TA decides to do.
