One of the HARDEST classes in my undergrad. (I took both 30BL and CL with him) I literally felt like my life was Organic Chem ALL THE TIME. The pre and post labs took hours to do, the research project was extremely stressful and reports were time consuming. Not only that, the labs itself were pretty challenging and no one ever finished within the allotted time. No one in my class knew what they were doing either, so the entire class struggled together.

With that being said, Professor Bacher is by far one of my favorite professors and I thoroughly enjoyed Chem 30CL even though I hated the course load. Yes, it is ridiculously hard and you have to devote a lot of time to it, but the end results are extremely worth it. I find the professor funny and passionate about the topic. He is a genius and goes over each lab in class very well.

I will say this, get your hands on his old quizzes if you can!! Studying off of them helped me so much on the in class quizzes. You are quizzed each week on the past week's lab experiment which can be annoying to study for it, but it helped with studying for the final in the end.

Definitely go to office hours! He yelled at me several times for asking questions, but he explains things very well. He also takes the time to get to know students names. Do well in both chem classes, get on his good side, and you are on your way to getting a good rec letter.

Fuck this guy. Honestly, if you have to take this class, you're screwed because he's the only one who teaches it. This class takes up all of your time and you will still receive failing marks on every quiz/pre-lab/post-lab you turn in.

I hope you don't have any other classes or a job while taking this, because he probably conducts this class under that assumption.

And to top it off, half of the podcasts did not work for whatever reason.

Let's be honest, this review doesn't really matter. Bacher's the only person who teaches the O-Chem labs; if you need 30BL or 30CL, you'll have to take his class. This is really unfortunate, because Bacher's classes are frustratingly hard. You'll get crappy yields for every experiment, none of your spectra will look right and you'll get about 50% on all of the quizzes and formal reports. The only saving grace is that everyone's in the same boat as you, and he can't fail everyone. Just keep at it, study the course reader well (especially the parts irrelevant to the lab procedures; he loves quizzing on those) and you'll come out alright.

I had him for both Chem 30BL and 30CL. I didn't get a very good grade for 30CL, but I still think he is a great professor. He is very tough with the grading. Therefore,if you want to get a good grade, avoid him. However, if you don't care much about the grade, but really want to improve in your lab techniques and learned the materials, take him. I think he is a very caring professor because he would go to our lab and take a look at what we were doing. He has high expectation for his students, so he would push us very hard. I worked really hard for chem 30Cl, but I still got a bad grade. However, I am not going to hold a grudge against him because I am satisfied with all the techniques that I've learned.

Avoid this professor at all costs!! He is sooo mean and definitely has a favoritism for certain students. Whenever I went to his office hour, he always yelled at me for going there and "bothering" him and never smiled at me. He makes you feel soooo horrible and worthless not just gradewise but as a human being. I would remember what he did to me even after I graduate. He definitely needs to change his attitude toward students

Dr. Bacher is definitely a difficult professor, but he is by no means malicious. He really cares about his students, and that unfortunately translates into him pushing you until you can't take any more...and then pushing you some more. I'm a senior now, and I took 30BL/30CL with him as a sophomore, and I can honestly say that he has taught me more about organic chemistry and critical thinking than any other professor here at UCLA.

To succeed in both 30BL and 30CL, you want to pay careful attention in lecture and really sit down and learn the concepts in Bacher's course reader as they come up in your labs. It's pretty much inevitable that you will have to go to office hours, as it's impossible to understand absolutely everything in lecture. If your approach is to try to memorize everything, then you are likely to fail his final; he writes it such that no question repeats itself between his exams from year to year, and even gives you a reader full of his exams. That being said, there is this consensus that your final exam IS your grade. I can confidently say that this is false, because I did not do as well on the final as I did in his class overall. So, DO try hard on your lab protocols, your lab report, and your final paper (if you are taking 30CL).

Overall, don't let the hype surrounding the class overwhelm you. It's definitely hard, but it's doable if you put in the work.
