tl;dr definitely one of the best 103 professors, but very few gradebook points overall

Prof. Santos clearly knows his stuff and tries to make the material accessible for those without a heavy stats background. The material itself is quite difficult, but Andres tries to build a strong foundation in terms of the intuition behind formulas which really paid off during the latter half of the class. During COVID, he held lectures at the scheduled time and recorded them for those in different timezones. He's really helpful in office hours if you're struggling with anything, and, in terms of the week-to-week workload, there's 5 problem sets which aren't too difficult. In terms of 103L, coding in R was not as bad as I had expected, and I'd say that it's pretty to grasp even if you have no prior coding knowledge. That being said, the one major gripe I have with this class is how few points there are (i.e. the one midterm was 17 MC questions, and the final was 30), which makes it hard to do well if you get even a few wrong on either. Secondly (though this isn't as major), Prof. Santos often delves into proofs/derivations of formulas, making it easy to get lost in the algebra and not understand the underlying ideas. Other than these problems, though, this class was pretty great and I liked learning about the material.

I think Professor Santos is the best professor for Econ 103. It's a hard class, and I was definitely scared going in, but he's not only a good lecturer who really cares about students learning and understanding material, but his tests and assignments were actually really fair.

He assigned 5 problem sets that weren't crazy difficult or anything. Two problem sets were in R, the coding language, but he teaches you everything you need to know about R. There was also a midterm and a final that were all multiple choice, and he gives you a lot of practice questions beforehand. I did pretty well on the problem sets and the midterm but kind of bombed that final, lol. The midterm and final are very similar, though. Lots of conceptual questions.

Overall, he's just a really swell guy. He sticks around after lecture to answer questions and he's super patient too. He'll often repeat complicated concepts and responds to emails quickly. I almost understood what was going on in the class.

Professor Santos is awesome. I was really afraid going into Econ 103 because I hate statistics and didn't do super well in Econ 41, but Santos was extremely clear when explaining concepts and truly wanted his students to do well. He always responded to emails about content or homework with detailed replies.

There are 5 problem sets throughout the quarter (two that are R coding) that aren't that bad and a good way to get points and make sure you understand the basic material. He also provides lots of practice problems before the midterm and final, which was a pretty good indicator of what was on the exam. He is so friendly and always willing to help. I would take this class with Santos again!

Super informative class, extremely math intensive. The grade is almost entirely based on a take home final, which is hard, but doable. I am lucky to take a class with Andres, and TA Lucas Zhang, they are super clear and helpful (also eager to help).

I would definitely recommend taking Econ 103 with Professor Santos. He is one of the best Econ professors I've had at UCLA. He clearly knows his stuff and he is very nice and helpful. The material itself is quite difficult but he is able to explain everything clearly so it won't be as hard as it seems. Make sure you go through all the lecture slides (yes he posts all the slides on ccle) and understand the concepts before taking exams since the questions are quite conceptual. I would also recommend making cheat sheets for exams

As someone who has struggled through most of their econ classes, Professor Santos is a godsend. He is super clear and concise, his lectures are easy to follow and his slides encapsulate everything you need to know for the course. He's always answering questions as they come up in class, and he always gives good explanations. I thought his class was really fair, the homework didn't ask too much of you, you just had to slightly apply the material from lecture (and not to the extent that other econ profs might). Because of COVID the lab section focused a lot on R, so you get to learn R pretty well. The exams have a mix of calculations based questions and questions like "which of the following is true/false". This is one of those classes where there's only one midterm, so make sure to really know the material well. If you have a choice of who to take for Econ 103, TAKE SANTOS!

Very well taught course overall. Wish there was more practice materials at certain points but it went fine. Tests require intuition to do quickly but can be solved with just formula sheets and some deduction. They are also much more difficult than the HW which is pretty easy. Probably the best econ professor I've ever had at UCLA.
