Professor Hewitt is witty, personable, and extremely intelligent. The reading for this class is dense and difficult, but Hewitt breaks down the material in class with funny, contemporary analogies. If you are interested in philosophy and theory, regardless of your major, take this class. But do all the reading and be prepared to be called on in class.

Prof. Hewitt is one of the finer professors UCLA has to offer. Really, you ought to take a course with him if you can. I actually picked up Germanic Studies as a second major after taking a course with him. Even if you don't imagine that German is your cup of tea, you'll find the material relevant to just about any of the humanities (literature, philosophy, art history, sociology, etc..)He left room in the assigned paper for you to take the material in the course and relate it to your own field of interest, so it was a great way to get a different look at your own major.
The reading can be challenging, but lectures do a good job of helping you to make sense of it all. Still, you have to do the reading because he is fond of calling on students. This isn't passive learning.
His examples are probably the best part (you'll see what I mean!). He's very witty (and he knows it), so the lectures are always entertaining...to put it mildly. You won't fall asleep. More importantly, its hard to leave his course without a change in perspective.
