Overall, I really enjoyed my experience in this class! The professor is very clear and is always super open to answering student questions -- I was never made to feel stupid for speaking up. What I also really liked about his class was that Wilkenheiser made it accessible to all students given COVID-19 by offering hybrid options to everything, and not penalizing students if they were unable to come in-person. He had Zoom options for both lecture and discussion, although I am not sure if this will be continued for future quarters.

He had 4 non-cumulative quizzes in place of midterms and finals. The quizzes were very doable if you understood and reviewed the lecture material, and comparable in difficulty to the practice questions he posted. All the questions were very fair and he even dropped questions that he thought where poorly worded or that the entire class did badly on. They were also all online and open note.

Discussion attendance was mandatory, but I found it helpful (shout out to my TA, Lindsey) since it reviewed the material from the previous week. You also turn in 5 reaction papers total for points, which are basically one-pagers that connect the content of the class to your personal experiences -- very doable, shouldn't take more than 2 hours at most if you're following along with lecture.

The last component of the grade was 1 problem set. Because we moved through material slowly than previous quarters, he ended up making the problem set based on a scientific article. Similar to everything else, it was graded very fairly and very manageable in terms of workload.

Again, I would highly recommend taking Psych 110 with Professor Wilkenheiser if you can. The material may not be the most engaging, but he is very fair, accommodating, clear, and concise in his lectures!

Andrew has to be one of the best column A professors that UCLA has. He's super fair with the exams and listened to students and was willing to give everyone points for exam questions that were confusing/more than one answer. The class is asynchronous which makes it easy to fall behind so try to stay on top of the lectures. The assignments seem tedious but they help sooo much. I failed one of the exams and still ended up with an A- because I got 100% on all the assignments (they really help!) At the end of the quarter, he gave a breakdown of everyones grade in the class and 76% of students got As! No one failed the course. Andrew wants everyone to succeed. It seems like he only teaches this course in the Spring or summer so I recommend waiting to take it with him.

Took him over the summer after taking this course with another professor and let me just say, what a breath of fresh air!! Highly recommend, he knows how to explain the material. Assignments and quizzes weren't too difficult, just review the PPT slides beforehand.

Professor Wikenheiser was extremely understanding during difficult times on campus. He was also very clear when teaching the lecture material. I went into the class dreading it because the topic wasn't something I was particularly interested in. I can tell that the lecture material can be super hard to teach conceptually (especially Rescorla Wagner), but he made it so digestible and easy to understand. It was actually very impressive that we was able to do calculations in his head, let alone explain how the formulas you learn work since it could get very complicated. He's a very engaging lecturer and is an animal lover! Would definitely recommend going to in-person lectures, even though they are optional. He is very intelligent, friendly, and easy-going when it comes to assignments.

The 3 exams were online and pretty easy with a bunch of time allocated to do them (75 mins). He gave us a bunch of time to do the problem sets, which didn't take long to do and was pretty straightforward. Overall, if you're a psych major and need to complete Column A requirements, I would 100% recommend taking Psych 110 with Professor Wikenheiser. As someone who's more interested in social psych, Psych 110 and animal research was super fascinating to me! Professor Wikenheiser made it much better in my opinion.

Professor Wikenheiser was a very clear lecturer and made the material easy to understand. I just attended all of class asynchronously because there is a live option, zoom option, and Bruincasted option (attendance is not taken). Attending discussion section was optional, we just reviewed the answers to the weekly section BruinLearn quizzes that are just graded on completion, then the second half of discussion is office hours with the TA. The tests are fair, online and open note, but you definitely should study beforehand. Half the students got A+'s on the first two tests according to the grade distributions the professor shared with us. The TAs were very proactive, answering questions on Campuswire and providing us with review session recordings. No extra credit, but all the assignments were fairly easy.

The workload in this class is extremely light. The lectures are not mandatory (they are recorded). The discussions are also not mandatory (they are essentially just an office hours for the TAs). There were several assignments throughout the quarter, but they are all pretty easy. The reaction assignments are very easy points. The problem set was the hardest assignment for me, but if you go to TA office hours you can do good on it because the TAs are very helpful. The conditioning proposal is very easy as well. It is a half page paper, but it's a fun assignment. The exams are definitely the hardest part of this course. If you get 100% on every single aspect of the course (besides the 3 exams), you can miss a total of 11 questions on all 3 exams in order to get an A in the class. I didn't do well on the 1st exam, so I could only miss a few questions on the 2nd and 3rd exam in order to get an A, but I managed to do it. The material in this class was not my favorite, so it made the whole course less enjoyable for me, but Professor Wikenheiser is an excellent professor.

This was a great class! Not only did I learn a lot, but it was relatively straightforward to get a high grade, as well. I came into the class with mixed expectations (thinking I would be bored mostly just learning about animal studies), but I ended up finding the concepts pretty fascinating--the short writing assignments allowed me to see how everything could generalize to human learning, as well.

Professor Wilkenheiser is amazing at teaching. I felt like his slides had just the right amount of detail, and he always took the time to explain things in-depth and answer questions where needed. The grade scheme was very fair, consisting of short writing assignments/problem sets (graded for completion), weekly quizzes (graded for completion), and lecture quizzes (basically open-note + online midterms). I feel like the class structure kept everything engaging and gave us the room to learn/make mistakes without punishing us grade-wise. I've completed most of my Psych upper divs already, and I'd honestly say this one was the easiest to get a good grade in.

Overall, I really enjoyed this class, and I'd definitely take another class with Professor Wilkenheiser in the future!

Easy AF!

Considering that 110 is a core course for the psychology major, I expected it to be a difficult class where I struggled a lot. However, Professor Wikenheiser was a delightful professor who always explained the material clearly. And if you didn't understand it the first time, he was happy to review it again. I consistently went to office hours, and this helped significantly for the exams so I would recommend going if the lecture content isn't sticking well.

The class breakdown is as follows: there are 3 exams, weekly quizzes which are graded for completion, weekly reaction writing assignments based on that week's lecture content, 1 problem set, and 1 single-page conditioning proposal. This workload is relatively manageable if you give yourself sufficient time to study for and complete each assignment.

In terms of choosing your core courses, I would definitely recommend 110 over 115. The content is more straightforward and less stressful if you're juggling other challenging classes. Overall, I highly recommend Professor Wikenheiser for 110!

Professor Wikenheiser was so much better than I expected! The class was relatively easy, with recorded lectures, straightforward slides, and optional discussion sections. The tests themselves can be tricky, but they are manageable. I didn't particularly enjoy the problem set, but the conditioning proposal was a fun and creative activity! Take Wikenheiser if you want a relaxed, interesting, and light class!
