Professor Orme is incredible. I have never learned so much in a GE before. It really helps if you are interested in details because Professor Orme will test you on those. His tests are tough but the curve is great because you really know who deserves the A. He has 2 hours of office hours a week and is always available to help. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!!! He is such a neat guy and he will help you out with anything. It is also really important to attend lecture and write everything down because anything he mentions is fair game for the exams. TAKE ORME!!!

Despite all the glowing reviews here, I plain and simply didn't care for this class or Orme. While often rather nice and friendly, he, in my opinion, came accross as rather arrogant at times. The below reviews aren't kidding...his tests are absolutely ridiculous. The obscurity with which he pulls his questions is just plain frustrating. Not much of a help at office hours either, so if you're the top who needs to meet with a teacher/TA frequently, at least go in with very specific questions in mind. He seems to care about everyone learning a little something, I suppose, he's just not all that great in helping to do so.

101: Coastal Geomorphology I didn't like this class. Orme's a nice guy but his exams are ridiculous. I mean, his classes are usually as follows: for 15-30 minutes he'll review stuff on course outlines that he posts online. Basic things like definitions. Then for the next hour or so, he will give you examples of the stuff that he just barely mentioned. EXAMPLE AFTER EXAMPLE AFTER EXAMPLE. He turns off the lights, turns on his projector, and kids get ready for a show. He tends to ramble and it's really hard to distinguish between what's a story and what you're supposed to remember. His exams are RIDICULOUS. Does he really expect us all to remember exactly which dam he mentioned that rose this much in sea level this much time ago? Exams are multiple choice. The final was 100 questions, I don't remember for the midterm. This class was a struggle. Going to lecture felt pointless because when I wasn't bored to death, I was struggling to see what his point was as he rambled on and on and on... and on. Yeah. No thanks. I wouldn't do it again. And I hope I passed. And I was so excited to take a class on coasts too.

This class was HARD--well getting an A is hard but getting a B is doable. Orme is genuinely concerned about his students understanding the information he teaches. He does his best to make the lectures interesting despite the dry subject matter. My best advice is GO TO OFFICE HOURS BEFORE THE FINAL. Even if you don't have any specific questions, if other people are there asking him things about the final, just sitting and listening will help you A WHOLE LOT. I went to office hours before the final to ask a few questions and he literally took out the final exam, read me the multiple choice questions AND ANSWERS pertaining to the topics I asked about. While he didn't tell me what the correct answer was, I was able to go look it up myself. This class consisted of a midterm, paper, and final. Both exams were multiple choice (maybe a couple short answer, I can't remember now) and required that you memorized EVERYTHING that was taught in the class. That being said, to do well will require that you study a lot before exams, however, these exams are VERY straight forward with no surprises. If you study you will do well, if you are lazy you won't. Don't be scared off by this or other reviews. I would say though unless you are a geography major or into the physical sciences, I wouldn't see a reason to take this class if it is offered as an allied field course for your major.
