Professor Orme is incredible. I have never learned so much in a GE before. It really helps if you are interested in details because Professor Orme will test you on those. His tests are tough but the curve is great because you really know who deserves the A. He has 2 hours of office hours a week and is always available to help. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!!! He is such a neat guy and he will help you out with anything. It is also really important to attend lecture and write everything down because anything he mentions is fair game for the exams. TAKE ORME!!!
Definitely not an easy GE. However, I hear that if you have taken Earth & Space Science 1 prior to this class it is extremely helpful. I was not so lucky. I would highly encourage going to your TA's to make sure EVERY ANSWER on your homework is correct - DO NOT count on making up for wrong answers on the exam. He certainly enjoys what he teaches, which is very important. If you are like me and don't know anything about the earth or how it operates, and you need clear lectures to understand it then I wouldn't recommend this class. I am not afraid of new vocabulary, but when you are trying to grasp information and the professor uses a lot of large, descriptive words it makes it that much more difficult. Professor Orme is an extremely delightful gentlemen and his knowledge of the Earth is immense. I think the biggest problem is that Geography 1 attempts to cover entirely too much information in the time given. It is impossible to learn everything about the earth in ten weeks. If you don't mind that little bit of extra work for a GE, or if you are a Geography major - then Professor Orme offers an excellent opportunity. The TA's were also very helpful for labs - which were not a piece of cake either. But if you did well on them the good grade ends up meaning a lot more to you, than if they weren't quite so difficult.
