Anu Vikram is the only professor teaching this course at UCLA, and it’s required in our department. But this class is pretentious, and the professor can be unhelpful. Vikram wants to lecture and get out, and doesn’t care to answer your basic questions. If you ask, they will ignore you. It happened twice in my lecture series.

Don’t understand what modernity is? Don’t get what the homework assignment is? Ask your TA instead. Professor Anu will make you feel bad for asking.

CLASS : DESIGN/MEDIA ARTS 101
MEDIA ARTS: INTRO

I took this course over the Winter23, it was breeze and there were NO exams or quizzes just daily discussions posts.

She is very vague and hardly teaches btw, during class she shows videos of Media Arts. Like what are we suppose to do with that...but oh well I got an A lmao.

Side Note: We had a online midterm (writing based), roughly 2 pages long. We were given a whole week to submit on Bruin Learn.

Side Note: The workload is very minimal, all we had to do is choose one of the readings each week and make a discussion post about them.

An easy A class, I was worried to take this class because I was at 23 units my last quarter, but managed to get an A. SUPER CHILLL CLASSS!

This class was rather disorganized. The lecture slides consistently included 50+ images and she went really fast. My TA was also very unhelpful. The content of the class was very interesting and I enjoyed that. It's not a difficult class. I took all 3 quarters with Anu and she is a great professor. She takes our criticism of the class structure and made it significantly better Winter Quarter and Spring Quarter.

I took this class all 3 quarters of my recent freshman year. This was the first time Anu was teaching this class with a whole new curriculum, so like mentioned before it was a bit disorganized and a little hard to follow but our grades were taken into account accordingly. Throughout the year the class became easier to follow and everything started becoming more coherent and the structure got better. I really enjoyed having Anu as a teacher, she’s very caring and engaged in the topic and I’m thankful i got to take this class with her.

Loved this class, you can tell Anu is really passionate about art history and while the subject is very eurocentric, they like to focus on indigenous art where applicable and includes a lot of engaging readings each week. The workload is very minimal, all we had to do is choose one of the readings each week and make a discussion post about them. Midterm is just writing about 2 pieces, and there is a short 1000-1500 word paper due week 9, and the final is just a reflection. Aside from that, the content of the class is extremely interesting and Anu does a great job of linking to a global scale.

If you enjoy casual endorsements of neo-Marxism and shallow, logically fallacious analyses that somehow always arrive at the conclusion that the world’s ills can be blamed on “white people”, “capitalism”, “the west”, or “the patriarchy” – then this is the class for you.

If you value your time and care about your education – stay away.

An “easy A” is not worth subjecting yourself to this intellectually dishonest drivel.

This class is amazing! I would recommend it to anyone interested in modern art. It's mostly a breeze, but there are weekly discussion posts that are a drag. The lectures are long but very interesting! Make sure you pay attention and take notes because you will not remember everything.

The midterm is two 1000 word essays. For each prompt, you pick from a choice of three works of art to analyze from a historical and visual point of view. Since lectures are recorded this midterm is easy. It's mostly just regurgitating facts and saying a few things about how the art looks.

The final is an independent 1500 word research essay. It can be about anything within the time frame (about 1920-1960). You can either pick 3 works by one artist, or 3 works by 3 different artists. The works you choose should be an example of a modern concept. Make sure you pick art you're really interested in because you'll be doing a LOT of research and reading about it. Expect to spend a lot of time on this essay and except to read BOOKS! like real-life physical pages! crazy I know.

Overall, I loved this class. Professor Vikram is so intelligent and quick-witted. If you're not an art or art history major, you might struggle a bit, but you'll learn a lot!

i hated this class because of the professor. the content and workload was fine and manageable, but the prof was so awful. she could never fit all the content into the THREE HOUR LONG LECTURE. THREE HOURS WAS NOT ENOUGH FOR HER? everything was rushed and went over the time limit. she was not clear about anything and struggled to clarify questions. she was very eager to go back in person that she split the 3 hour long lecture into 2 classes each 1.5 hour lectures because the room was not big enough for everyone to go as one lecture. i just did not enjoy the class at all because of her. my ta was really nice and understanding though. we basically had to write discussion posts every week on the readings and write a couple papers for the midterm and final on artists and artwork and their impact. easy class, bad prof. avoid this as a ge if you can
