Quarter: Summer 2019
Grade: N/A

This was an online class taken over the Summer.

Professor Little is an energetic professor that is clearly invested in Shakespeare. His lectures share his own critical perspectives on Shakespeare's major plays.

The course itself is very poor. It's organized how you would expect for a summer course: video lectures, board discussions, quizzes, and essays. Though there isn't anything inherently wrong with it, the course is painfully plain. By far the largest issue with the course is the quizzes. Not only are the quizzes timed and monitored through Repondus lockdown browser + webcam à la Big Brother style, the quiz questions are nothing short of BS. According to our "course information" page on CCLE (a sham of a syllabus which this class doesn't have), our assigned readings are annotated versions of Shakespeare's plays. The questions asked on the quizzes, however, involve Shakespearian actor names and loosely related paintings that you might be able to answer correctly if you critically extrapolate from extremely minor and obscure details. Couple with that, the final exam is composed of these quiz questions and have a combined worth of 40% of your total grade. Almost half your grade is reliant on questions that feel less of an examination of your mastery over the subject matter and more of garbage trivia that you could probably look up in a second. All of this is overshadowed by your laptop's monitor and microphone turned on that stares you down making sure you don't cheat (Respondus has an eye tracker).

Based on purely the quizzes alone, I cannot recommend this class to anybody.

Prof Little is such an engaging and passionate teacher. Really enjoyed having him as a professor; he makes a boring class about Shakespeare actually entertaining.

To all you who believe Professor Little needs to be called out on this, email his supervisor *************, he needs to hear more.

I honestly was shocked at this guy. First of all, he is "funny", but his humor is derived from claiming he sees a therapist and has issues. Also, he not only plays favorites, but like many recounted, he gave A's to 14 people for FREE and exempted them from 35% of our grade (the final), because he believed they were great and deserved it. Free A in Upper Div English class? 1. what a joke, what does our degree even mean if you get a "gold star" freebee A? Or that you took the final? One of the two. 2. Illegal and Unprofessional 3. UCLA = joke.

Professor Little shows grading in this major IS subjective through this, and that by kissing up and going to office hours it is possible to achieve an 'A'.

Aside from having issues, putting down students (he does not agree with anything people say. Some kids in our class even read criticism and came to class claiming this stuff as 'their own ideas', when it came from professional minds, and he would knock it down within 45 seconds.

IS LATE ALL THE TIME. Does not begin lecture for about 30 minutes because he is absorbed in talking to and picking on random students to make the class laugh.

Out of an hour and a half lecture, the average the lecture would last was 40 minutes. This irritated me so much, especially because I am paying good money for my "education".

I do not recommend Little in any way, shape, or form except as a court jester.

After the first week of class I seriously contemplated dropping it because I can not stand theater and realized that I made a mistake. However, once we got into the plays Dr. Little had super interesting ideas and was extremely engaging during his lecture. I thoroughly looked forward to coming to his lectures and learning more about Shakespeare. The structure of this class made it pretty easy to get a good grade. You have to read a different play each week (usually 3 hours with an audiobook), but in all honesty you can probably escape with reading the summaries or the "No Fear" translations (something that Dr. Little and the TAs look down upon though). There are two papers, one is three pages the other one four and a half, the topics are a little strange but nothing awful. The TAs were very generous with grading in my opinion so you don't have to stress about it. The midterm and final are extremely easy if you just take notes during class and pay attention, I would strongly advise against skipping lectures.

This was genuinely one of the most stressful classes that I have taken at UCLA. Professor Little wants you to regurgitate back to him the things that he finds interesting, not to provide your own analysis or interpretations in your work. He decides within a a few class sessions whether or not he likes you, and if he doesn't, you're basically screwed for the quarter. He was *over an hour* late to multiple meetings with me, and he was not understanding of my need to miss class for a major surgery. For my final project, I waited to get his approval on my topic, wanting to make sure that I didn't write a paper he didn't like on principal, only for one of his first comments on the paper to be that he didn't like what I was doing with the topic. The quizzes are random and very difficult, because they're often not directly related to class materials. Cannot recommend enough that you stay away from this class.

Personally, this class wasn't really for me, but I know that a lot of the other students had a good time with this class. There are 8 assigned plays, and we read one play a week. This workload is pretty manageable tbh, and you can get away with reading the play in modern english on litcharts. It is important to know significant quotes from the play though, so I recommend reading some of the original text beside the translation. The class is graded on 2 tests and 2 papers. One of the papers is 2-3 pages and the other paper is 3-4.5 pages. Professor Little is very engaging and his lectures are great, but I find it difficult to write papers for this class because the papers are VERY deep. This is my first year at ucla, so I might not be used to the depth of some of the classes, but it's nothing like any literature class I've taken before. If you are really good at getting super deep in Shakespeare, this class may be great for you! But this class just wasn't my jam..

By far, one of the most awful professors and classes at UCLA. While the assignments are really easy, if you make a mistake the Prof and the TA are extremely unforgiving. Prof Little's lectures are so strange in the sense that he goes on really random tangents and doesn't deeply discuss any of the texts. He just randomly quotes dialogues super dramatically, as though he is Shakespeare and tells us the origins of certain words. The class content is so horrible but if you are entertained by these kind of things, then I guess it would be a good class. Coming away from this class, I learned absolutely nothing about Shakespeare or the thematic depths of his plays. Honestly, the assignments are really easy but I missed one of them because of certain personal circumstances and the Prof and the TA were extremely unforgiving. They did not give me any accommodations whereas every other Prof for my other classes this quarter had helped me in some way or the other. Was on track to get an A, but this completely destroyed any chance of that.

I decided to take this class for my love of reading Shakespeare plays; this class taught me all the plays I once read from a better perspective than a high school teacher. Professor Little is constantly engaging with students, takes the time to accurately learn students' names, and teaches the material effectively. I would recommend this class to anyone taking the course and if available, have Johnathan as your TA. He is the best and helped immensely with breaking down all the material.

i had professor little for both shakespeare later plays and gay lit, i enjoyed him and his tests we generally fair but he is really disorganized, but yes he was late every single day, and yes his blatant favoritism was out of control. and for his little award ceremony on the last day, i wanted to walk out. he actually made the rest of the class clap for the students he gave the automatic A, i thought it was totally demoralizing for the rest of the class not to mention totally ridiculous.
