I loved this class. Artur teaches very well and is extremely clear. He is friendly and approachable, and very invested in student learning. He is so enthusiastic about what he does!
REVIEW FOR LS30B SPRING 2020: All I can say is, hands down the most charismatic and accommodating professor I've had. He really loves math and you can see it in the way he teaches. Best piece of advice, go to the Midterm Review Sessions and really pay attention for those 3 hours, literally almost a guaranteed A on the exam. Love you Artur, hope you accomplish amazing things in the future <3
I loved this class and it's one of my favorites that I've taken so far at UCLA. Artur is a very down-to-earth professor and clearly cares about his students. His office hours are very helpful, so definitely take advantage of those! He holds 3 hour review sessions before the midterms and final, so I would also recommend going to those. He includes memes in his lecture slides and often makes jokes which makes the class funny and engaging. Don't be worried by other reviews talking about his tough tests, this quarter he started working with the other LS 30A professor (Will Conley) to design the exams and I found them to be very fair. I would recommend studying with a friend in the class and doing lots of practice problems! There are two grading schemes, and the one that gives you the higher grade will be applied.
Grade Breakdown 1:
Participation - 10%
Homework - 10%
Labs - 15%
Midterm 1 - 15%
Midterm 2 - 15%
Final - 35%
Grade Breakdown 2:
Participation - 10%
Homework - 10%
Labs - 15%
Higher of 2 Midterms - 20%
Final - 45%
Overall, I would highly recommend Artur for LS 30A or LS 30B!
ARTUR IS SUCH AN AMAZING PROF, really gonna miss the guy. As usual, even though he's a young professor, he was really helpful, and taught the material clearly, going over the previous lecture's information and building on it each time.
This class was surprisingly a breeze, even though it dealt with tough and mind-twisting concepts like eigenvectors, linear algebra and matrices. The tests were super easy (I mean, go to lecture and pay attention and take notes of course, its not easy otherwise). The questions were straight forward, and tip: just draw diagrams if you have any extra space left over, it really does help the TAs know that you know your stuff. Just like last quarter, Artur posts practice midterms and they were a huge help to understand the format and go through the material. Last quarter most people were a little worried about the midterm, so we all studied much more this time, and the midterm was so easy most of us finished early. Pretty sure that over 3/4 of the class got an A!
The labs were a little harder, just because I'm still pretty bad at coding and don't try that much. But I was still able to get As on each of them because of my TA and LA guiding me (Shoutout to Hao, an icon). The homework assignments were usually not too long, although Artur had to push the deadline since we got a little behind on the material. One of the homeworks became extra credit at the end. There was a lot of extra credit this quarter actually, like extra questions on the midterm and final, the LA survey, and various other little things.
Basically, I came into this class nervous because I didn't have any experience with calculus, but eventually I didn't worry too much about this class and my grade in it, even before taking the final. So I know Jukka has been the golden standard for the LS30 series, but honestly I stuck with Artur for both quarters because I liked his pace of teaching and it helped me a ton. Both of them are superb. I HIGHLY recommend Artur, and good luck with life, whoever you are!!
Nice guy, snazzy dresser, great teacher. Wish he taught all my classes.
If you get a chance, ask him about his tattoo ;) (MATH related). Very engaging!!
This is one of the best classes I've taken at UCLA. I'm a junior and the last math I took was 11th grade precalc but I was totally fine. He's a great lecturer and manages to explain concepts really well in a short time without it seeming rushed. The coding is taught in discussion by TAs, and was a little disconnected this semester but I heard the LS30 teachers are trying to improve it. Having a basic background in coding is definitely helpful but I did well on all the assignments without any prior exposure and not too much work. I'd definitely recommend taking this class!
Artur is by far my favorite professor at UCLA so far. He is incredibly down to earth and clearly cares about his students, starting off most lectures by taking a few minutes to talk to students instead of lecturing and see how everyone was doing, and always pointed out when it was quiet to get students to interact more. His office hours were the first I've gone to and he was incredibly welcoming and made me feel like any question was a good question. If you have any calculus background the class isn't difficult at all, its just a different approach to math than most people are used to. Though his first quarter teaching everyone said his tests were more difficult than other professors and it showed that it was his first time teaching, he has read his bruinwalk reviews to learn from any feedback students give and it was clear he worked to actively improve his lecturing. His tests also were designed together with the other LS30 professors to make the tests more fair, and they were just like the practice exams he gave out. I would absolutely recommend Artur if you have the chance to take a class with him.
Professor Artur is really knowledgable and smart!
I'm just here to tell anyone that needs to hear this; If you're ever crying in a lounge or on your floor or in the Study at 3 am a week before finals because of the coding assignments, you're not alone. It's gonna be okay. The rest of the class is chill though. Artur is cool.
Class was easy and I literally love Artur so much he is by far the coolest prof I’ve had so far!!
