105A was so much fun with this professor. You naturally learn and improve your vocabulary through class discussions relating to Japanese social culture. Since this class tends to be small I'm sure certain classes are going to be more/less fun depending on how friendly the students are, but the professor makes the environment much less awkward through her silly jokes. She does call on you one by one so it can be a bit nerve wracking at times, but she makes a great effort to patiently understand what you're trying to say. About 1 quiz a week and a couple group projects.
I really recommend taking her class! She's a really sweet professor, often telling us funny stories about herself and her daughter. This class does not have much homework and she is an easy grader. There are quizzes that are slightly hard but they are online. Attendance and participation matter, but she creates a safe space where it is easy to participate. I had a small class of around 8 people so it was easy making friends with all of my classmates. There are a few essays but she gives feedback before the deadline so it is less stressful. There was an 8 minute presentation at the end of the quarter but it could be recorded or presented live. She also brought in a guest lecturer once so that was really cool. No matter if you join her 105B class or not, she hosts a karaoke party at the end of Spring Quarter and invites everybody from 105A and 105B to join.
This was a fun class, Hayashi Sensei's teaching style aligns with people who are heritage Japanese speakers. All the reading and class discussions are things relevant to the students so doing the assignments for the class didn't feel like work because I genuinely enjoyed it. In this class we talked about things that we liked and was relevant to us using Japanese as a medium to do that, so my Japanese improved with me even thinking about it too much.
