In terms of the class, this is a research seminar, and with that (obviously) you need to be a self-starter and an engaged student. There are weekly reading assignments that need to be thoroughly and critically read. If you are interested in the topics of gender studies, epistemology, and research, the readings will feel interesting and informative.

One thing I want to say is that Professor Basarudin is truly here to help you succeed. She is a great lecturer, listener, and a mentor, and as long as you do your part, you will be able to cultivate a meaningful relationship with her. Her seminars were always filled with students eager to participate, laughter, and snacks (which she brought for us!). This has been hands down my favorite class at UCLA, and Prof. Basarudin has been helpful during and post-college. In a school as big as UCLA, it may feel difficult to find professors who you can actually bond with (or even have time for you), but I'm lucky to have taken this class and gotten to know Prof. Basarudin because she has been nothing but kind and helpful in my academics.

If you are a hard-working and engaged student looking to conduct your own research in gender studies, I'd 100% recommend this class and professor!
