Fall 2018 - It was not a horrible class but honestly, I didn't learn anything. The class would be better as a lecture in my opinion. Since it was a seminar we literally sat in a huge circle and talked about public diplomacy but literally nobody knew what they were talking about and Sanders (although a smart guy) was all over the place and didn't seem like he knew what was going on either. The "TA" was literally in my grade and transferred to UCLA when I did. The only reason he was the supposed TA was because he took Sanders other class the quarter before (meaning he had never taken a Public Diplomacy class!). There was a group project, final paper, and weekly discussions. Average class overall, if looking for an easy A I'd choose something else before this.
Spring 2022 - Barry Sanders was absolutely AMAZING. He is so accomplished and so thoughtful and caring about his students. He took us all on a field trip to Walt Disney Concert Hall for a private tour (he helped design the place too) and bought us all a fancy lunch after! He truly cares about student wellbeing and learning and will meet you to chat over coffee. The materials in the class were fascinating, it reminded me of AP Art History but on a way deeper level. The class itself was based on 3 papers and weekly discussion posts. That wasn't my favorite because I struggle writing long papers or thinking critically. But, they were definitely interesting subjects to research! The last paper was 50% of the grade.
