Ben is incredible. I can't believe this is the first time he's ever taught-- he teaches in a way that not even tenured professors could fathom. He's absolutely incredible and I wish more teachers were like him. If you have the chance to take a class with him, do it. He's *Chef's kiss*

Note: I took this for my major, not as a GE

I think this class is great, but the setting of my particular lecture was a bit unfortunate. Monday and Wednesday evenings in a dark room in Bunche Hall for almost 2 hours--it's not really the professor's fault that the lectures did feel a bit boring and tiring at times. I definitely engaged with LING 1 material more because I could do it on my own time, so if you're excited about a Ling GE, I'd say 1 is also easier and provides a better overview.

That being said, the workload was pretty easy, the final was super easy (just a long homework assignment), and you do get free lollipops in class. All in all, I'm not raving about it, but it is a pre-req I needed to get done, and it wasn't a painful one at all.

I'm going to be honest, this class would be much harder if my grade wasn't 75% assignments, 10% section attendance, and 15% final. The weekly assignments are usually not too hard and my TA would essentially reteach us the concepts that were on the assignments during section. Additionally, lectures are recorded and are not mandatory. Definitely go to section though not just because it is mandatory, but because the TAs are actually helpful/teach you how to do the homework. The final is pretty much a long homework assignment. I personally did not like this class that much, but it is not a horrible GE. I would definitely take it again if I needed to do a relatively chill GE.

Professor Eischens is amazing. He presents all of the course material in a really clear/organized way and always uses excellent/concrete/fun examples for all the linguistic concepts. He’s also super chill and approachable! As for workload, we only had weekly homework assignments, which made up 75% of our grade, along with 10% for participation and 15% for a take-home final. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed taking this class and would highly recommend it to anyone as a GE or even for fun.

Eischens was amazing. This was my second Linguistics course and for the first class he's taught, he did fantastic. Super sweet and nice guy and is always understanding. His slides are also great and are all you need to complete the homework and do well on the final (which is take-home btw). Overall, if you have to take Ling 20, take it with Eischens!

Professor Eischens is one of the best professors ever. He really cares for his students and gives us so many opportunities to ask questions and really grasp the concepts. He is probably the most articulate and well spoken professors. There are ALOT of slides to review each week, but is manageable. We have weekly assignments that are not too hard, can be challenging. There was no midterm, but there was a final (for us, it was online because the TAs went on strike). Overall, he's amazing.

Fantastic class and best GE I've taken! Ling 20 was a really interesting class and was taught so well, glad to have this professor at UCLA. Workload was super easy, you just need to attend the lectures and do one hw assignment per week
